Iconic cars to be built in Communist country in £1bn deal Manufacturer says 25,000 UK jobs are not under threat Sales have risen in China by 80% this year

Jaguars and Land Rovers are to be built in China for the first time in a £1billion deal. Jaguar Land Rover said the joint venture with Chery, the sixth largest car-maker in China, will not mean lost jobs in the UK, where it employs 25,000 workers.

The first models to shift production are likely to be the Land Rover Freelander and Defender 4x4s, with luxury Jaguar limousines set to follow.

It also involves the creation of a separate range of vehicles – under a different brand name – specifically for the Chinese market. A newly built factory near Shanghai will start production in 2014. It is the first time JLR cars have been manufactured from scratch abroad – rather than assembled in kit form from parts made in Britain and shipped out.

China is now the world’s biggest car market with sales last year totalling 18.5million vehicles.

This is illustrative of a growing problem:

China.

China is protectionist. We ignore it, while it is eating our lunch.

China is different. It needs different laws, and different policies. Equal treatment is (not) what is needed.

People don’t seem to have a problem buying Apple products that are all mfg in China, and I doubt vehicles will be any different.

Here’s a good example, Hondas mfg in China sold in Canada:

Who would have ever thought that Land Rovers and Jagwires could be even LESS reliable than they already are?

What is the problem? Both are pretty crappy with socialist labor, they can’t make them any worse.

Shouldn't they be making hybrids and electric cars to save the planet? lol

There’s no reason to think that an Indian company would specifically want to run its business in Britain.

Business is business. Britain or China, who cares?

Hey I have a 2006 Jag bought barely used. It has been a really good car. Maintenance is expensive as heck but have only had a few minor things break.

Manufacturer says 25,000 UK jobs are not under threat until the Chinese facility is up and running. Then they are gone, lads, and they won't be coming back.

I see real cause for alarm here. China's heavy industry on the rise the west waning. It isn't sustainable, for us anyway. There are only 3 ways to create wealth. Mine it, Make it or Grow it. We are giving away one leg of the industrial stool - the most important leg to a Communist regime. I guarantee bribes were given.

Others see humor, crazy.

At some point, China will flex its muscle and nationalize all these companies.
