RANCHO SANTA FE (CNS) - About 60 shelter dogs and cats displaced as Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast will arrive in San Diego Saturday, then will be taken to a Rancho San Diego animal center, according to center officials.

The Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Sea World Rescue Team and Southwest Airlines teamed up to fly the shelter pets from New Jersey.

So people who may have lost their pets and their homes, still trying to get back into their homes, will never know their animals are across the country?

These are animals from affected shelters.

"These are the silent victims," Helen Woodward Animal Center President Mike Arms said. "There are shelters that have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy, without electricity, without supplies.

Sometimes they reconnect a few months later after the dust clears. Microchips are a beautiful thing.

I am now actively looking for a dog under 30 pounds, (weight limit set by the PTB,) but I will have to go to the shelter to find something that likes me. :o])

I can hardly wait!

Caution: 2 families did this and I am not happy for them. They are making the best of it! Both advertised... medium sized dogs... when grown are over 60 lbs. They did not know to look at the puppies size of their feet. They do grow into those big feet!

How about a “breed” rescue group like Westie Rescue ( West Highland Terrier). I am sure there are others in your area like that. Usually full grown and even mature dogs who have lost their owners are cared for in private homes and you are the one interviewed. Seems silly, but they do get them placed well.

10 pounds and under are very tiny, over 20 and they are almost too big to lift constantly. Think a lot! Try not to let an aggressive dog choose you!!!

Some friends of ours who had dog-sat our greyhound decided to get their own dog. Unfortunately, instead of going to Greyhound Crossroads for a perfectly-trained retired racer, they let a vet friend talk them into taking an unknown-breed puppy. Cute little thing, about the size of a very large cat ... but now he’s over 130 pounds and impervious to all training efforts.

One morning earlier this year, he decided he wanted to see something up the street, and he pulled Joanne off her feet and down the sidewalk on her face. Why she didn’t “shoot, shovel, and shut up” at that point, I don’t know ...

I’ve had dogs most of my adult life, from puppies to older dogs. I am also a vettrinary assistant, though not active at the moment.

I appreciate your concern, though. I have always detested animal abuse, and feel as if the dog will pick me. Also, I feel bad that I can’t take a pit bull mix, as so many of them are available.

I’ve never met a dog (or cat) that didn’t like me. :o])

German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (CA) has a surviving dog from Hurricane Katrina. She was adopted in 2006, returned for financial reasons in 2011, and is now waiting for a new home.

Two items: Lucy has basic training and can be the only pet in the house as she does not care for other dogs and cats.

Glad to know you have your eyes wide open!

Somehow I read into you post that this was a first for you...

I hope you find a partner in life like I have now and often before. I never feel tied down, just loved up!

I almost did not take this dog since it might outlive me...what a loss it would have been...1st birthday last week.
