But at its core it is a deception: it measures not absolute poverty but relative poverty–i.e. inequality. Under the old poverty line, “poverty” could be eliminated as society got richer–an achievable and widely shared goal. But the new poverty line will rise as society gets richer

“the new poverty line will rise as society gets richer”

This, of course, makes it the perfect measure from the standpoint of poverty bureaucrats. We will never “solve” poverty no matter how many trillions we throw at the problem. No matter how much we raise the bottom, there will always be those with even higher incomes at the top. The war on poverty will continue in perpetuity. Why is it that progressives always want a quick end to real ground wars but not on the war on poverty, the war on drugs etc.?

As long as “poverty” is defined as the lowest quintile of household incomes, there will always be a twenty percent poverty level.

Poverty will never be eradicated. This nation keeps importing a menial jobs working class from Mexico.

We are told they are “only here to do the jobs that nobody wants”, then we hear how bright their children are and that they should not be denied instate tuition, etc. College grads who only take the jobs that nobody wants? Or is this self-improvement to step up to higher paying jobs in society (which means needing a new generation of low wage employees to be imported).

And with the governments (Federal, State, and local) handing them money to make up for the cash (BILLIONS every year) that they wire back HOME to Mexico, the problem will never be “fixed” by pouring more money into it.

The welfare state is not a temporary crutch or safety net, it becomes a way of life for some and politicians are dependent on their votes come election time.
