Gun Vanity Time!! In the market for an AR-10 platform...
Vanity | Nov. 14th, 2012 | DTogo

Supplementing a bolt action Ruger American Rifle in .308, looking to acquire an AR-10 for hunting, range time, etc. Researching manufacturers such as DPMS, Bushmaster, Armalite, but of course in CT there are unconstitutional limitations on models that can be sold.

I have the AP4 but I modified it to suit my needs.

DPMS Baby! Definitely on my shopping list.

Very dependable and can reach out and touch someone accurately.

Also a real nice long distance cordless drill...

I have an AR (5.56) and an FN FAL (.308).

Frankly, I prefer the FAL for function over the AR system. Esepecially the left side charging handle, which is the proper location for a righty.

I shoot the Springfield M1A and I love it.

I passed on the SOCOM because I was hearing all kinds of problems with accuracy beyond 100 yrds.

I think it is due to a 16” barrel.

I went with 18 and it’s fabulous....

Best part is if I run out of ammo it is easily converted to a bat for clubbing zombies .....

Move out of CT first. Then buy the gun.

No questions on this for me -—get a Noveske N6-—

I’d also throw in a geissele trigger and opt for a 14.5 inch barrel with a 1.5 inch flash suppressor (welded on).

Barrel sounds short, but Novezke makes such a good barrel that you be MOA at sick freaking distances still

A friend has the M1A SOCOM and it shoots pretty well out past 200 yards. Not as good as the regular model and I do believe it is because of the shorter barrel. The other thing is that the thing is LOUD and the muzzle blast is a sight to behold!

I have regular M1A with the synthetic stock. It has probably the best factory trigger that I have ever shot. The only thing I don’t care for is the standard scope mount puts the line of sight so high that you can’t get a good cheek weld with the standard stock configuration.

LOVE my FAL STG 58. It’s a straight-shooting work of art! Even with my tired ol’ eyes, I can keep in on the paper offhand at 100 yds.

I have an AR-10A4 from Armalite. It's sweet. Magazines are a little on the pricey side, but the factory frequently has sale packs.

Of course, if you want to do long range tack driving, get a barrel longer than 16", but just keep in mind that due to the larger cartridge, the action and barrel of an AR-10 is going to be quite perceptibly heavier than a similar length rifle or carbine in 5.56.

I know a lot of folks don't like direct impingement systems, but I've never had an issue with reliability or fouling, and I shoot a lot of old, cheap NATO spec Portugese surplus ammo.

I shoot left, but never had a brass issue with the later AR models with brass deflector. I did pass on the DPMS slick side because of that though. My A3 upper DPMS with deflector is just fine ejecting well away from my face. No need for a lefty version.

My rifke started like with an adjustable stock, but I removed it for an Ace skeleton stock. Never cold get used to the movement of the 6 position thing. Learned to shoot with the M-14 with all that nice wood to snuggle up to.

Same here. Mine now wears a fixed stock, rifle length gas system and 18.5” chrome lined barrel from Fulton-Criterion.

Well, let me define issue...it never hit me in the face, but it does eject in front of you and is kind of distracting. The Stag 2TL I have makes that go away.

I too have a DPMS AP4 .308, which is great fun to shoot.

The muzzle blast and noise out of the 16” barrel is a little intense, however.

I don’t know what advantages the SOCOM has over a 16” AR in .308 that justifies the SOCOM costing almost twice as much.

Yeah. It’s tough to scope it correctly but I love it without the scope.

I do want the super super sniper one that comes with a Bender & Schmitt scope.

Probably voting another M1 in same config first and a DPMS or FNL before I buy that.

Should this AR-10 platform be applied in a self defense scenario, it would be preferable to terminate the opposition immediately. As for lacking a spine to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, you are addressing the wrong person.
