How will GOP solve fiscal cliff riddle?
Politico ^ | 11/8/12 11:09 PM EST | By STEVEN SLOAN and KELSEY SNELL

Republicans know they’re going to have to budge on revenues in the looming debt and spending debate. The question is when to blink.

The problem: Revenue increases, which could solve the fiscal cliff riddle this fall, are also their best bargaining chip for an even bigger fight to overhaul the Tax Code expected next year. GOP lawmakers — especially those on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee — say tax increases should happen only as part of a fundamental Tax Code rewrite that also lowers marginal tax rates, a policy dream that won’t be realized until next year at the earliest.

So with 53 days left until the U.S. plunges off the fiscal cliff, House Speaker John Boehner will have to decide whether to sacrifice revenue earlier than he and other Republicans had hoped — and right now, he’s not saying.

The election didn’t solve the gridlock problem. Boehner won’t accept raising taxes and Obama won’t accept anything less so that leaves...taxmageddon. BOHICA.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

“The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

“The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president.”

Prager Zeitungon

This quote came from the Czech Republic. Someone over there has it figured out. It was translated into English from an article in the Prague newspaper

(I think it’s bloody brilliant, and should be passed on into viralocity.)

GOP will cave and will take away deductions causing people’s taxes to go up while being able to claim-”we did not raise tax rates-we won!”

You can see the parsing of words right now on Drudge: BOEHNER: Raising Tax Rates ‘Unacceptable’...

Not raising taxes...but raising rates is what he is against.

In exchange, the dems will cap increases in welfare for 5 years with an exception on families with children, families with medical needs, and families below the poverty line. (translation: exceptions for everyone)

Obama wins and it’s up to the GOP to fix this?!?

Let him put his effing plan out there. Let Obama come up with the solution, we’ll put it through, and he’ll be 100% accountable for the disaster.

Raising Rates is a narrow statement.

Doesn’t mean that futzing with who’s in what rate bracket won’t go on.

Doesn’t mean that they won’t be for NEW taxes. You know under these extreme, special circumstances.

My understanding is that this is the same as Romney's plan which was:

Lower rates for all.

Close loopholes for the rich (thereby simplifying the code which is what conservatives have been calling for for years).

If it's the same as Romney's plan the middle class still get their deductions up to $20,000 or something like that.

Romney’s plan was to lower rates in exchange for eliminating deductions. Boner is saying he wants to eliminate deductions in order to keep rates from going up.

Keeping rates from increasing is not cutting rates.

I have read several accounts that have Boehner talking about lowering rates...same as Romney.

The voters put Obama back in power with his great ideas. I say let him and his buddies solve the problem. I would just say the voters have spoken and we will just stand aside and let Obama do his thing. We will just disavow with having anything to do with it. Within two years everything should just blow up in his and the dimoKKKRATS face.

Example from ABC News:

"The Ohio Republican said raising revenues would be accomplished through economic growth, lower tax rates, fewer tax loopholes and by making the tax code simpler and fairer."

Why solve anything, the Fiscal Cliff was Obama’s idea, let him live with it. Let everyone see how much Bush actually cut their taxes and how much lying the Democrats have been doing for the past decade. It also provides some spending cuts. How long have we heard how hunkey dorey everything was when Bill Clinton was President. This basically sets the revenue picture back to that point and spending at least on a path to get there.
