It's a punishment as old as mankind: shame. A judge has ordered an Ohio woman, who drove on a sidewalk to get around a school bus, to wear a sign that reads “only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus.”

Chris Tritico, president of the Harris County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, says he likes the creative sentencing. "You know in some respects it's really not a bad deal sometimes."

Tritico says it also serves as a deterrent.

"I think it clearly sends a message to other people who might wanna be as stupid as this person was."

Tritico says making such offenders wear signs certainly seems more beneficial than having them sit in jail for a weekend.

Judge Ted Poe (now a representative from TX) was well known for doing stuff like this. Whether or not it actually works, I don't know.
