RIM (Blackberry) just closed plant in Irving, TX due to election.

Posted on 11/07/2012 3:14:50 PM PST by publana

My friend who works at RIM in Irving, TX just called to tell me he, and 3000 others, were just laid off. The plant is closing. He says another employee told him it was because of the election.

It's a sad day for this man as he was already extremely depressed that Romney lost. Now to lose his job?

Is it because the Blackberry is a fading platform, and their tablet was too late to make a dent in the market?

At least this thread is a factual bit of first-hand news and not a vanity about garment ripping or one of the two other thread types we have had all day.

My husband works at a coal fired plant. We are waiting on the decision if it’s staying open or not

Have faith, but get prepared. I work in the coal fired power industry. Not sure where you are, but it will be tough. Sooner or later, this will come to a head, I am just afraid that so many people (and their critical skills and expertise) will move on before we get our senses back.

I would appear so. They were all counting on the new Blackberry being the next corporate phone.

After the posts here, I can’t help but feel he must have had some inkling, but I talk to him at least weekly. He never mentioned any threat to his job at all and was devastated when I talked to him. He said that all the employees were shocked and didn’t know.

RIM closed its plant most likely because it was a poorly run company that is not competing against others. Survival of the fittest, folks. If you can’t compete, you will go out. Blaming Obama for the market’s Invisible Hand is not going to be logical. Likely that the plant would have closed regardless of who won. Who buys blackberry these days?

There's no election pending so no hugs from Osama for those 3000 folks. They're just a bump in the road on the way to 100% of the population getting some kind of government check.

I heard on the radio a few months ago that the new Blackberry phone was going to miss the Christmas market. The ramifications should have been obvious to anyone who worked there, I'm afraid.

Do you have a source besides your friend to back of this story?

A lot of people are being laid off in preparation for the cost of “free” health care taxes.

The Rim Blackberries are a fading technology...underpowered and the software is outdated. The new smart phones with the multicore processors are blowing them away!

Rim has been going down the crapper for the past year, hate to tell you this but Obama had nothing to do with this one. You can blame Apple and Google who have been destroying them for the past couple of years.

This indicates that the leaders of RIM adore Obama and hid this reduction in for e until after the election on purpose.

Their new model is supposed to be based upon the Android. It was supposedly downright “snazzy”. As he works on all models, including 10, he is shocked.

I think Blackberry can come back -- the name is still valuable. Development will continue. In Canada.

my friend just closed his small business in Ferndale, michigan, as of 12/31/12...it was hanging by a thread. He is done, all due to the election.

My wife grew up in Ferndale. Sorry to hear about you friend's business.

I have the same situation as you. On top of that, at 8am this morning I received an email from a young liberal friend of mine who asked me if I could hire her. Apparently, she just got a lay off notice from Caterpillar here in Denver. I took the delicious time to explain her upcoming reality.

Thanks for asking. It was actually good for a couple of years - then it’s been tougher the last two. I don’t regret the decision though, and I suspect thousands of not millions more will be joining me soon.
