Last night Porta Rico voted to become the 51st state. It won't matter too much financially as we have been supporting them for ever. But it will add a complete state to the " Takers" list. These people well be entitled to two new Senators, and the usual number of Representatives, and they will be allowed to vote in our Federal elections.

They already take my taxes. Unincorporated semi states get a lot of the benefits of being a state (some welfare programs, military bases) and none of the downside (federal income taxes). It’s really a sweet deal, never figured out why there’s a bunch of people in PR that want to change that. Yeah they get open to a few more benefits, but they’ll get taxed.
Bully for them! Maybe they can replace the 20 or so that leaves.

Remember that the income or lack thereof in Puerto Rico is very low, hence not much of an income tax problem, remember 47% of American workers pay no income tax.
Puerto Rico, if admitted, would become the 30th most populus State.
This means that there is little chance of Congress admitting them into the Union, they would be a financial burden and would receive more "federal funds" than 20 States and all of the other territories.
Actually, I don’t think there are any travel restrictions now. Puerto Ricans are US citizens, & Puerto Rico is US territory now, so I believe movement is free now.
Puerto Rico can enter if Texas can split into 4 states.

If I had wealthy, I'd keep it in gems instead of gold. Much easier to pack when it's time to flee.
What taxes would they be taking? Puerto Ricans pay federal income taxes, fica, Medicare, taxes that American citizens pay. In addition, they pay inport and export taxes on virtually everything they buy or sell. How are they taking taxes any more than people in the United States?

TX can split into any number of states, as can any other state.
All it needs is for the state legislature and Congress to agree.
If any party had a sufficiently large margin in Congress and a number of states, it could split the each state it controlled into a large number of new states. This could in theory permanently pack both the House and the Senate. Perfectly constitutionally.
Given how much we already spend on Puerto Rico I don’t really see giving them statehood as costing much money. Of course the place is poor as dirt, so they won’t contribute much, and they’ll make the unemployment numbers even worse. So in the end I doubt Congress will do it, neither party wants to inherit those numbers, but I still don’t get why PR even wants it, they get all the best parts of being in America without the bill now, don’t fix what ain’t broke.
