Like all of you I am "bummed out" by the turn of events in the election. I'm still reeling from the presidential and senate defeats. And I'd like to ask advise of the freepers. I'm 62 years old and a retired veteran. I'm still working a second career and am eligible to hang it up altogether. I've been heart-sick the past few years by the direction of my country. I've kept hope alive that someday somehow the GOP would embrace winning conservative principles and "kick butt" but seems to be totally incapable of doing so. I don't know. Maybe it's time to give it up and retire overseas. I'm totally horrified over what will likely happen the next four years. Obamacare scares me to death. The fact that we now seem to have more takers that givers and roughly 50% even pays income taxes at all. I'd hoped that we'd reached the tipping point with this election but I guess not. It looks like this country is going to have to sink into the dust before people will come to their senses. May God help us!

My advice is that as Obamacare finally comes out in the open, if you are above 70 DO NOT GET SICK, if you do you are a dead man.
If you do get sick,and are refused treatment, take someone out with you.
I’m 66 and just posted on another thread that I am through with the political process. I have played by the rules, voted in every election since I was 21, and realize now we can never win, since rules and law don’t matter anymore. Let’s face it, Soros has finally won, the new world order will be set in place, so there really is no place to run. I know I sound like a defeatist, and I am normally an optimistic person, but I see the writing on the wall, and it ain’t good.
Friend, this is not meant to be a personal insult, even though it might sound like one.
Are you willing to give up your government checks? e.g. your military retirement, and your coming social security/medicare?
Of course not.
But that’s the problem. Too many people get government checks and too little economic activity occurs to pay for it all.
It’s not until your and every other government check recipient stops getting their checks that we have a chance of turning things around. That’s what it will take.
I hope you see my larger point and do not take this personally.

There have been two specific times in my life when I had great hope that our rush to destruction could be halted. First was in the late 1980’s when thousands heroically were jailed for blockading abortion mills. The church wilted when the gov’t came with RICO.
The second was 9/11. I had hope that the shock and horror of the attack on our soil would drive us to an examination of our national spiritual condition. Even Abe Lincoln called for prayer and fasting after his Union army suffered defeat.
That, of course did not happen in 2000.

I’m a little younger but I feel the same way. This was for all the marbles and while we were concerned about the rules, the other guy stole the marbles, again.
The people of the US just voted for higher taxes, increased education costs, increased government intervention, increased energy costs, increased healthcare costs, less religious liberty and increased illegal immigration. Not all the people, just a majority of people in a few states imposed this on the rest of the country.

Damn, I just got a new home after living 3 years in a horrible, spider-infested, moldy basement! I got it for a good deal, so as long as I keep my job, I can keep the house, but... I don’t want to move to any other country. I guess I just have to keep my head down and prep like I never prepped before. Just be frugal. I can handle myself, but I so worry about my children and the world that most inevitably will develop once they’re older. I feel so protective, I’d rather they just stay close and not go out there and become targets of leftist engineering. I’m a horrible person, I don’t even have a gun. I should have had a gun, a few guns at this point in my life for protection. I can just sense what’s coming.... Rambling. Couldn’t sleep.

The point is not that people should refuse their benefits, it’s that too many people get these benefits, and we don’t have enough economic activity to pay for it.
The benefits will have to stop for everyone to make the changes we need to make. Until then, they are content with the status quo.
Nobody is going to voluntarily give up their government checks, nor am I advocating. I am advocating framing the actions when (and it is clear that it is “when” not “if”) the checks stop coming.
Keep working. The parasites are depending on us.

And if I DID have any guns - I don’t think any red-blooded American would just let someone waltz into thier house and take them - loaded. Because once the guns are gone there is nothing left anyway.

Canada has had a Conservative Prime Minister since 2006. He’s done a good job. We should be so lucky.
I hear ya. My friends and I spent the 1990’s trying to elect a government in our city that would do something about the high crime and taxes that are driving people out of the city. A huge number of city voters do not pay taxes, and receive government benefits, and, I suspect, are either criminals themselves, or are related to criminals, and have no desire for effective law enforcement.
Five years ago, my wife and I got tired of waking up to nearby drive-by shootings, and we moved out of the city. I still have my business in the city, and if I could sell this building, I’d move my business out of the city.
We also were involved in trying to get people elected to state and national office who would value freedom. We failed there, even in electing W.
We can’t yet afford to retire, and the proverb about not being able to control the wind, but we can adjust our sails, applies. We cannot worry about what we cannot control, only our behavior and our response. We have to look ahead and look to what we can control, and how to make the best of it.
I suspect that there will be a lot of John Galt responses, and there are a lot of ways we can do that. Many businesses have already done that by refusing to invest in expansion until there is some predictability in taxes and regulations. They may stay on strike for the forseeable future.
I’m looking for expansion. I have an accounting firm, My job is to legally deprive the government of every dime to which it is not legally entitled. I intend to profit from the voters’ stupidity.

I’m not insulted by your comments but this is how I see it regarding Social Security and Medicare. I didn’t ask to sign up for either one of them but have been paying through the nose for them since I was 16 years old. If offered the chance to opt out of either of them I probably would have taken it but the government imposed them on me without my consent. Now that I’m approaching the end of my working years I refuse to feel guilty about taking what I’ve been paying for all these years. And I have seriously considered that if we’d all give up Social Security benefits that it would reduce the deficit...until I remember that regardless of how much we give to politicians they will find a way to squander it. No thanks.
I wasn’t trying to make you feel guilty. The point is that adding yours, eventually mine, and everybody elses medicare social security and all the other myriad programs the government writes checks for has an extending effect on the status quo.
The status quo keeps us from a more constitutional form of government.
The argument that one check is more deserving of payment than another is a red herring. They will stop, and we will have a brief moment to contemplate if we want to return to a constitutional basis for governance. That moment needs to be planned for.
Hitler even in the rigged ‘34 elections didn’t win more than 43% of the votes. Obama did...
and most erstwhile third world countries are clawing their way out of it -- ironically by rejecting the same socialism that we are embracing.

Welfare in the West is a pyramid scheme. you paid for your elders and so do we
the problem is that
1.there are less working for more retired
2. The welfare schemes were designed for people to live only 5 to 10 years of retirement, whereas people live longer now
3. the government didn't keep the money separately but used it to pay for other things
Net result, the scheme WILL fail, the only question is when.
I have always paid for my health insurance but now I will have to pay a Cadillac tax on my plan because I PAY for my plan. If I had just not paid for health insurance, invested the money and just went to the ER I would be way ahead. But that is not who I am and that WAS not the America I was brought up in.
We are now in a new dimension where rules are selectively applied.
