I disagree with you. If a business expects for you to pay the service help then they need to bill you for whatever amount is due. Figure the amount of the tip due and add it to the bill. Better yet, they should pay their employees a reasonable wage, post a ‘no tipping allowed’ sign and be done with it. If that means that the cost of the meal is higher than currently listed on the menus, so be it.

Many servers are single moms. A lot of single moms are there because of their own bad decisions....but there are many who are there through no fault of their own.

I haven’t spent $130.00 at a restaurant in years, but every one of my tabs get a $ 5.00 tip if the bill is only $10-15 dollars! And I have in the past spent fortunes on dinners, lunches and other services and if the service was bad they got 10%, if obscene then probably a dollar or a dime to send a message, but never zero, and for any server who was excellent, they received no less than 20% and many times significantly more! But, Gosh! I always received Wonderful Service from my Favorite and regular restaurants! Gosh! I wonder why?
I am curious about the service you get? Do you ever go back to a restauerant, bar or Dive a second time? Just curious!

Marty, I agree. There are plenty of things that SHOULD BE a certain way but aren’t. I didn’t make the rules. The fact is, if you don’t tip your server properly, they are not only earning less than minimum wage while working for YOU, but they also must pay taxes on the money you should have paid to them. Every night the server has to claim their tips with the employer who then taxes them and reports them to the IRS. If you stiff your server, their taxable income goes down based on their number of hours worked and sends a red flag to the IRS that someone is not claiming their tips, and the server has NO WAY of proving some jack@ss stiffed them. They must overpay their taxes. It’s just not right. If you can’t pay your server, don’t get served. It’s easy!

No. You’re not their daddy. But I feel certain if you were, and heard your daughter tell you how she worked six hours after attending classes all day, and came home covered and smelling of food after being stiffed by some thug, you would feel different. I know my daddy did. As far as “putting it in the price,” most restaurants are starting to crack down on deadbeats that skip the tip. They are protecting their servers “in writing” at the bottom of the menu where it says 15 (or 20) percent tip will be added “automatically” on parties over 6. But you are right, it should be added to every tab for losers that go to restaurants and pretend not to understand the meaning of “usual and customary.” Some people need a law for everything. Now shouldn’t you be scurrying on back to DU about now?

Wait staff are not paid the same hourly rates as, for instance, retail or fast food workers, and minimum wage is not applied. They make considerably less as tips are part of their income. Additionally, after they changed the tips tax laws some years ago, a percentage of the restaurant’s income is used to calculate what the government has decided you earned in tips. This will be on your W-2 and you will pay taxes on it.
Banquet halls or catered events etc are not the same and while you can earn a tip from whoever hired the venue it is not normally part of your pay.
So don’t be a jerk, and tip a server in a restaurant based on the level of service you received, taking into account that many things are not controlled by your server, including whether the food is any good or not.
I think it’s “interesting” (not speaking of you in particular) that many people wouldn’t dream of not tipping a bartender have no problem stiffing the waitress at the neighborhood restaurant.

People in service industries DO get audited if they get tips. The assumed % is 8%. Which is what the IRS will tax you on.
When I was a waiter I had to keep a log of my tips for this reason.
Scream and squeal about how cool you are when you don't tip, but unless the waiter/waitress REALLY fouls up your order, you should leave something.
And if the service IS that bad, talk to the manager and raise a stink. At least you should get your meal comped.
For the record: the worst tippers ARE gaggles of women. They always wanted separate checks (BIG PITA BTW), and then would either stiff, or leave a paltry tip.
Next worse: People coming in with gift certificates. Their meal is free, but they think that no tip is part of the deal.
Next worse: single businessmen. (If you're a waiter). Waitresses tend to get over-tipped by these guys. But they also have to put up with the come-ons and butt-slappings.
Finally: Most Un-PC: Asian, particularly Japanese customers. Tipping is not customary in Japan. So they either stiff, or are exceedingly generous and polite. Black customers almost always gave crappy tips. And they did this to waitstaff of EVERY color. Black waitresses did not relish waiting on black families for this reason.
Best tippers? Heavy smokers (when it was allowed) and heavy drinkers.
One of my best tips came from a bunch of construction guys sitting in the smoking section. They ran my butt off getting them refills on beer. Mind you, this was at 2pm. When they left I expected the big stiffo, because I'm a guy.
When I got to the table there was a huge pile of dollars and change resting on the table.
