When PA Colored Red, $190 Dom Perignon Worth It?

Posted on 11/04/2012 10:03:10 AM PST by SarahPalin2012

I'm not a drinker, but want to do something special for when PA goes red. Jay Cost (who is the true sage of politics and I think lives in PA), is not formally calling it but reading between the lines I think he thinks we may win. Local Fresh Market has the Dom Perignon (which I've never tried) for $190. Should I?

I know what you’re trying to say, but no. In America it’s labeled sparkling wine. Brut means dry, which describes the sparkling wine. Sparkling wine can be adjectiveless which is sweet, brut which is dry, or extra brut which is very dry.

Many labels do not list "Sparkling Wine" since it is so declasse'.

For example, Ferrari "Champagne" just says "Brut" (CAP is specified different ways -- in this case just Methodo Classico)

I can show a lot of others. If it says "Brut" it means dry in the Champagne (or CAP) style/methode.

Likewise there can be sweet Bruts (e.g. N.V. Henri Abele Champagne Brut Cuvée Spéciale).

I was summarizing in that you won't see (or I never have seen) a Brut NOT done as sparkling.

I wanted to note that you can get really good "champagnes" NOT labeled "Champagne" but always labeled "Brut."

I will go for Monet when Romney wins. I have been looking at the Dom when I get my Kendell sometimes.

No. Mr. claret and I bought a bottle at a charity auction and were less than impressed. Follow everyone else’s advice on which $50.00 champagne is the best. Then spend the other $140.00 on something else - like maybe a case of Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot.

Once I flew Pan Am First Class 13 hrs JFK to Narita, great dinners and Dom Perignon all the way at will, as much as one can handle. Why settle for less, at least once in life? Old age and poverty comes soon enough.

I’m cheap. You can buy a lot of decent champagne or sparkling wine for $190. We bought a case of Barefoot Spumante for the occasion. We should have quite a few bottles left afterward for other occasions. I’m always ready to celebrate something. :)

Gotcha. My wife is a true oenophile, and I thought I’d learned enough through osmosis, but I guess not.

Since it will most likely be Wednesday morning before you know for sure, get a moderate priced Champagne and some really good Orange Juice and have Mimosas with breakfast!

Dom Perignon (or any other high-priced wine) is a complete waste, IMO.

Spend $50-60 on a nice bottle of good American Bourbon, and waste the rest on ammo.

Can’t go that far, but I do have a bottle of Veuve Clicquot (birthday present) chilling, ready for Tuesday night.

Good one lol. Actually I am a bit of a beer connisiuer (sp?). My favorites, at least American brews, are Amber Bock, Yeungling, Shock Top, but lately I've been trying to lose a few pounds, and for a light beer, Coor's aint bad. It's also an homage to my Dad who was a Coor's guy.

What are you, a rapper? Conspicuous consumption is always silly.

Better to get a case of decent wine to share with fellow celebrants. Or treat yourself to the chocolate of the month club (or whatever)—and celebrate all year!

Try the Belgians. They’re as low in calories as most light beers once you do the math. They seem calorie heavy until you factor in the alcohol content is usually between 8% and 10%.
