Study: Dogs dig classical music

FORT COLLINS, Colo.,- A Colorado State University professor said his research indicates dogs are soothed by classical music while heavy metal makes them anxious.

Lori Kogan, associate professor at CSU's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and lead author of the study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, said she and her team exposed 117 dogs to three types of music: classical, heavy metal and psychoacoustic classical music specifically designed to sooth animals, Postmedia News reported Friday.

Kogan said the dogs listening to classical music, which were of varying breeds, were generally more relaxed and restful than dogs in the no-music control group, while those listening to heavy metal displayed increased anxiety and unrest. Kogan said the psychoacoustic music had only a minimal calming effect on the canines.

"I did thousands of behavioral assessments over a period of four months ... So the likelihood that this is an error is pretty small," Kogan said. "It does fly in the face of what [Pet CD advocates] talk about, which is that more simplistic music should be more relaxing. The plus side is that you can download classical music for free."

I LOVED that video! That dog was smilin’ and gettin’ down to the music. He’s got rhythm, too.

I know for a fact my two mini schnauzers HATE 80’s music... when I turn it on to clean house, they want outside :) They get a full 5 hour dose of the local Christian radio music when I’m gone to work though and seem to like it just fine. Good doggies.

Linda-The-Dog was completely transfixed and enchanted for the full 16 minutes of Pink Floyd’s epic “DOGS”. (I think they had subliminal doggie sounds, even when there was nor barking in the score).

Torey-The-Dog(RIP) preferred the classics, especially “Faradole’ by Bizet.

Timber the GSD would dutifully howl along with the refrain of Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London. One of my biggest regrets in life will always be that I never got it on video.

Ha Ha Ha! I do that too! Here are the silly lyrics i wrote to “Farandole” for Torey-The-Dog(RIP)

Torey Lives
A life— of— ease!
It’s so pleasant to do what you Ple-e-e-ease.
In the Shade
So the sun won’t scorch
Her insulated igloo’s on the porch.
She is free from—ticks and fleas,
Although her medicine makes— her— Snee-eee-eeeze.
Of South Florida she’s the Queen,
Her paws wiggle when she has a dream.
A Dog’s life
Can be Kind neat.
Her only job is to be cute and swee-ee-ee-ee—eet
Eat, Drink, Play
Take Mama for a jog,
Life is Lovely just being a DOG.

Linda-The Dog loves Carmina Burana:

Oh Oh Oh
We just love her so
She’s so sweet and she’s so cute we’ll never let her go
Lovely Little Linda is our Pero, Our pero, Our pero!

Both LOVED it when i Play Hanon Exercises 1-40 on the piano...go figure.

Ha ha!

Torie and I used to howl together in a nice duet!

Linda has not yet mastered that skill, BUT Torie was a Border Collie/Jack Russell so her IQ was off the charts.

We don’t have dogs, but we do have alpacas. They boys and girls are in separate barns (for obvious reasons). We often play music when we do chores. The boys like Irish ballads and Desi Arnaz; the girls like Johnny Cash and Mott the Hoople. Go figure.

This song is my secret weapon. I can sing it to a fractious critter and he/she calms right down:

However, we have one male who is “all boy.” I have to sing this to get him humble:

I had a cat that really liked classical music. He would sit right in the center point of the stereo and his ears would turn left and right with the changes in the music.

My dog absolutely hates the opening theme music to the Dave Ramsey radio show. I listen to talk radio in the mornings, which my dog mostly ignores. But, as soon as he hears the opening notes of Dave Ramsey’s music, he gets agitated and starts jumping up on me begging me to make it stop. He’s consistently had this reaction every time he’s heard that music for going on 5 years now. Every single time. I usually try to change the station before the poor dog hears it, but once in awhile I don’t get to it in time. Pretty strange.

My two little one's love Rush Limbaugh's voice. I'm not kidding. When they hear his voice, they stop their little nervous paces and lay on their mat with the look of absolute calm.

That little guy with the headphones on in your 1st post looks like the twin of my littlest guy!

A couple decades ago, I read a story about a kennel owner who would play a recording of a dog happily panting. That would cause all the dogs in the kennel to stop barking and calm down.
