Study: Dogs dig classical music

FORT COLLINS, Colo.,- A Colorado State University professor said his research indicates dogs are soothed by classical music while heavy metal makes them anxious.

Lori Kogan, associate professor at CSU's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and lead author of the study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, said she and her team exposed 117 dogs to three types of music: classical, heavy metal and psychoacoustic classical music specifically designed to sooth animals, Postmedia News reported Friday.

Kogan said the dogs listening to classical music, which were of varying breeds, were generally more relaxed and restful than dogs in the no-music control group, while those listening to heavy metal displayed increased anxiety and unrest. Kogan said the psychoacoustic music had only a minimal calming effect on the canines.

"I did thousands of behavioral assessments over a period of four months ... So the likelihood that this is an error is pretty small," Kogan said. "It does fly in the face of what [Pet CD advocates] talk about, which is that more simplistic music should be more relaxing. The plus side is that you can download classical music for free."

I’ll assume they weren’t listening to the 1812 Overture

I don’t know about dogs and classical music, but some of my cats are absolutely hypnotized by Jimi Hendrix’s “Electric Ladyland.” My theory is that it’s the weird high frequency phasing effects that sucks them in. They’ll sit, without moving, exactly in the stereo “sweet spot” through all four sides.

...and psychoacoustic classical music specifically designed to sooth animals...

I wonder if this is related to the music they play on airplanes nowadays while you're delayed on the tarmac and everyone is antsy about missing their connection.

Our 10 y.o. Aussie Mix is normally on alert mode, even when he’s resting, if his BFF, my husband is gone. I was listening to some Leonard Cohen one afternoon and was amazed at how quickly the music put him into a very sound sleep. Guess the gravely voice faked him out!

Are they all female cats?

I had a tortoiseshell cat who adored certain kinds of classical music involving wind and violin insturments.

After observing her hehavior I investigated and discovered that some instruments create high-pitched sounds similiar to those of a kitten’s distress calls.

Piccolo and violin solos were her favorites. Tina would sit on the back of my chair, face turned intently towards the radio, listening. As soon as the piece finished, she would get down and go about her cat business.

We once had a miniature poodle and were listening to the last movement of the Holst planets- where the choir quietly fades out. He was sitting up, suddenly his eyes starting fighting sleep, and then he literally slumped over asleep in one movement. one of the funniest things we ever did see.

LOL They do. My guys are pretty well rounded, musically. They don’t care for Green Day, though. Or Aerosmith. They probably like Bossa Nova, Stan Getz & Ottmar Liebert the best.
The last part of the William Tell Overture plays every night at the dinner table when they have their chicken & veggies. (Figuratively speaking. Like the flute players when Mr Douglas starts talking about farming on Green Acres)
