A Dublin lecturer has discovered an unknown prehistoric site at the Hill of Tara -- without even leaving his desk!

Aidan O'Sullivan uncovered the 4,000 year old enclosure thanks to Google Earth.

The University College Dublin lecturer was preparing a presentation for his first year students when he noticed the site the traditional seat of Ireland's ancient kings.

O'Sullivan was intrigued by the unfamiliar dark, circular feature in a field photographed by Google Earth.

The Sunday Times reports that the lecturer was able to verify that the soil mark was a large embanked enclosure, dating back 4,000 years.

The reports says the enclosure, between 263ft and 328ft in diameter, is 2,000ft southwest of Rath na Riogh (Fort of Kings) an Iron Age enclosure at the summit of the Hill of Tara used for enthronements and other ceremonies.

The UCD lecturer believes the site was probably used for open-air religious rituals by pagans in the late neolithic era or Bronze Age, about 4,000 years ago.

It may also have served as a burial mound

But, confirmation was not made until local experts went and
discovered the suspected Bushmills bottles.

How many of our buildings are made for pagan and religious ceremonies? I guess you could include McDonalds in that category. But if you went back in time, I don’t think there would be as many religious sites as these guys claim.

If you want to understand why this article insists on using the word "enclosure" instead of something like "fortification", read Lawrence Keeley's book War Before Civilization, which details the extent archaeologists go through to avoid the conclusion that our ancestors were a pretty murderous bunch of people who actually built walls to keep their enemies out. An important book for conservatives to read.

I can believe this. I was looking at a town on GOOGLE I lived near about sixty years ago and discovered a mile circular race track no one remembered being there. I imagine it was for early stock car races or local horse races.

I saw something like that a while back, when looking for info on an old coastal Mississippi hotel that closed during the Great Depression. A few efforts to re-open the place failed and it fell into ruin. It was an ambitious place, with a golf course and horse riding trails which are still visible in Google Earth, despite 70-odd years of foliage regrowth. Amazing.
