Windows 8 early upgrades beat Mountain Lion OS X early upgrades by 1 million.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer claims that Microsoft has sold 4 million upgrades to Windows 8 in the first three of its launch -- more than the 3 million upgrades of Mountain Lion sold in the first four days of its launch. That sounds impressive -- but is it really good news for Microsoft?

During Microsoft's BUILD Conference today, Ballmer said, "In just the last three days, we have sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades. The level of embrace from enthusiasts is very, very high." He later called the results "stunning.

Computerworld's Gregg Keizer notes that those numbers are likely downloads, because it would be too difficult to compute retail sales figures in such a short time frame.

Mac OS X 10.8, called Mountain Lion, sold three million copies in its first four days via downloads. So Windows 8 is selling far better than did Mountain Lion in their early days -- an average of 1.33 million per day for Windows 8, versus 750,000 per day for Mountain Lion.

There's no doubt that Windows 8 will far outsell Mountain Lion. But the early sales comparisons between the two don't necessarily mean big sales and a great deal of enthusiasm for Windows 8. Windows has a far higher market share than does Mac OS X. Net Applications reports that Windows has a 91.7% market share, compared to a 7.2% market share for Mac OS X. That means that a far smaller percentsge of Windows users upgraded to Windows 8 in its first few days than did Mac users who upgraded to Mountain Lion in its first few days.

LOL, I am not an apple fanboy at all, can’t stand those whiners, but you are selling only 33% more of an OS that has an installed base of 12x more? And this is a “Victory”? Did we stop teaching fractions in school the last two decades?

I downloaded Windows 8 on to my desktop. It sucks.

I am hoping it will be better on the tablet. I hate to admit it but the Surface looks great.

One big advantage Surface has over iPad, is a built-in USB port.

It applies to both Apple and MS: I don’t think you should go around thumbs-upping how great it is that everyone’s ditching your old crap for your new crap.

I think MS jumped the gun on Windows 8. Windows 7 only has been out a few years. I was very hesitant to move from XP to 7 and only did so when a new laptop came with it installed.

I simply do not have time for a "learning curve" since my PC is my job. I love Windows 7 and see no possible reason to upgrade to 8 at this time or anytime soon.

I upgraded to Windows 8 for the $15 offer.

With one simple change, it is working great:

“Classic Start” skips the lock and metro screens, taking you straight to desktop on boot. Provides a classic start menu also.

I have yet to use metro for anything, I’ll try it later.

I heard metro is best for touch... interested to hear your opinion.

Snagged the $40 upgrade for “everyone” a few days ago.

It’s stable and fast.

I know change is hard, but this thing really works quite well. Absolutely everything I was doing on 7, works on 8.

The interface is a little different. Not bad, just different. Change can be hard, but this isn’t a bad one. If we want interoperability between all of our computing devices, this is it.

This thing is no Vista. Under the hood it’s a software masterpiece. From a technical standpoint it may be even better than 7.

The statement that Metro is only good on touch screens is pure negative propaganda. I’ve been running Windows 8 since late summer (I had advance access) and its great on a non-touch laptop. It works great with a mouse and keyboard.

I haven’t used metro at all so I don’t know what to think of it yet.

I wouldn’t have installed windows 8 so early, if I didn’t have the option to install “classic shell” that lets me bypass it and use the old interface for everything.

I have it on one of my new Ultrabooks at work. This is connected to a 32” TV and I use it for surfing and watching TV via hulu, slingbox, etc. I hated Windows 8 for the first day or so, but now am starting to learn my way around and understand it a little. The idea is to meld the PC and tablet experience (I think).

Metro is pretty cool and I really like the “just type what you are looking for” search feature without placing the cursor in a box. I have learned a few other commands and am starting to appreciate the “APP” centered idea behind Windows 8. Please understand that this is waaay different and don’t put it on a machine you use to make a living. You will be lost at first.

Also, a warning for older computers and screens of less than 1024x768 in either direction, even for HDMI like my 32” TV. Metro doesn’t work. I had to adjust mine from 1280x720 to a non native resolutiuon of 1280x768 to make it work.

The only other issue I am having is that the first tab on IE9 as launched from the desktop, does not work. The second tab and beyond work fine, but that frst tab is blank. When I launch the IE “app” in METRO, it works perfectly and is beautiful. I don’t not know how to make tabs in the IE METRO APP, so if anybody knows, please let me know.

I bought Win8 for one reason only, for my Samsung Slate. Now I can pinch and flick with the best of any Ipad. Also now I can’t use my medical EHR, have to click and flick to get a keyboard on my screen, that keyboard(locked in place to lower 1/2 of display) is so big and does not move to uncover your typing field so you are guessing what keys you are hitting and now youtube, netflix nor hulu are working.

Other than that I am happier than a pig in shite.

Buy what you like and like what you buy. Thats what makes America Great !

I won’t ever buy another Windows based product now that I swithced to Apple. I used Windows for years but I have gone 3 years with not a single glitch and no McCaffe or Norton anti virus. No annoying updates, security patches and constant virus warnings.

But people get to spend their hard earned money as they please.

Suckers !
