Free Republic | October 26, 2012 | greeneyes

Posted on 10/26/2012 11:50:41 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Need to “downsize” lifestyle due to economic circumstances.

Looking for a safe community for relocation where I can afford an inexpensive house with lot to garden.

Anyone have suggestions?

I have over-wintered my hot pepper seeds as an experiment, but I wasn’t impressed with the results. Red Hampshire may not have the best climate for such trials; but I may try again when I get back to the south...I do bring everybody inside when it gets cold to let the peppers finish ‘coloring’...

East Tennessee...many believe that it will become a ‘secondary bread basket’ for America as California falls to Mexico.

Southwest Missouri. Several small towns close to Springfield. Native SW Missourians are usually friendly folks. That area tends to be Reagan Country, bitter clingers hunting and fishing often. Lots of social conservatives. State Bonds are still AAA rated.

Just got back to Texas about an hour ago. Had made a trip to Mississippi to check on my house and property. It was 80 there yesterday afternoon - nice for mowing my lawn and picking up the cuttings - a two day chore now days.

It does get to be a real pain - driving to another property to mow the yard etc. We have a home in the Branson area, about 4 hours away.

I finally found someone that will keep it mowed for me for a reasonable price. We still have to go in to check on things - just not as often. Since our parents have died, we don’t really vacation there much. We’ll probably sell it if the housing market ever recovers.

Many small towns in Central & West Texas are just what you asked about.

Many homes sell for 25% of new construction cost and land is pretty cheap.

Look for one with good water, that is the grabber in many places.

Pretty hos in the summer, but winters are generally very mild.

I live in a town of 600 population. Some of the families (like mine) have been here since the 1880’s.

This morning I put out the remainer of my 6 flats of pansies. As I was down on my knees I was thinking of this thread - some of you may be like me - over 50 - and my back & knees are beginning to be an issue as I garden. Any tips?

I am sure there must be better tools than I have.... I know many, many retired people enjoy gardening. I took 2 Advil this morning before I began as I knew I would need it.

I've had back problems since my 30's but they aren't getting any better with age :)

My house is doing fine - no problems. We cleared out a rental storage unit (10x20) we had been renting for years and all that stuff is now stored in the house, saving us a few $ each month. We keep the electric service and water service going there. It is a very small house, (2 BR, LvR, large den, and a small kitchen) on a one acre plot. It is not worth $40K and would sell for much less if we sold it. The house next door is on 2 acres and much larger and has been for sale for over three years for 250K. They think the land is worth much more than it is. The house might be worth $80K, if that, in this market!

I am afraid if Obama gets reelected we might need that house as a fall back position just encase TSHTF. I just turned 65 yesterday and we will no longer have to pay property taxes on it and that is a good thing, unlike being on Medicare, which the TV commercials keep telling me is a good thing! Blue Cross and Blue Shield will be the primary through Peggy’s work at Wal-Mart - so I am told.

I really mis my garden at the old house.

We turned off the water, our Ins. policy won’t cover water damage unless you have stayed at the house during the 30 days prior to an incident.

We too keep it because it is paid for, but if someone made the right offer, I would sell it and pay off our current house. We rented it at one time, but that has its drawbacks too.

I just received my Medicare Card effective Dec. 1, 2012, and am filling out papers for a supplement this weekend. I figure I better get everything I can done before January 2013. If Obamacare persists, I figure it won’t be long before we are all labeled as “useless eaters”. Sigh.

I miss hearing about your garden too. I hope you will be able to do more next spring and summer. Hope the beer and wine projects are going well.

I have a retaining wall next to my patio, and one the other side is 3 raised beds about 21 ft. by 3 ft. I can stand on the patio, use the wall to hold stuff, and reach most of the bed to plant, weed, etc without bending.

For my other beds, I turn over a big planter and sit on it. It doesn’t do away totally with the strain, but helps a lot.

I use rice socks, heated or cold as needed for the various spots that hurt, and one of those massage therapy covers on the recliner. That usually is enough that I can avoid medicines.

This morning I left Mississippi at 4:30 am and arrived at the house in Texas around 10:15 - 6 hours or so. But no traffic at that time in the morning - 360 some odd miles at 70 mph most of the time except for an idiot who was going 45 in 60 mph construction area! Damn that had me puzzled and the trucker behind me also! It was zero dark thirty and no workers in the area. A twenty mile mile stretch of interstate made into a one lane. I would have been going 70! Not a lot of time wasted but damn annoying!

Oh Well. Made it safely back to Texas to my Wife Peggy and Cashmere - the Irish Setter who was wondering where I had gone with the riding mower without her!
