Does any one have any experience or insight into fighting Walmart expansion that they would be willing to share?

Walmart is proposing to build one of their Big Box stores in our neighborhood.

The parcel of land was for decades a plant nursery which recently ceased business and the land was rezoned for professional/light commerce, compatible with surrounding businesses.

Walmart's proposal will require a rezoning to heavy commercial. The hearing master meeting is October 15.

The parcel of land is on the main four lane north/south road, heavily trafficked, of Tampa, Florida, at an intersection with a two lane road of residential housing. It will require erecting a stop light.

One can go in any direction from this spot and within two miles shop at an existing Walmart if one wanted to do so.

It would appear that a large majority of businesses and residents in the immediate area are adamantly opposed and are organized with sign holding protests at the intersection three mornings a week, distribution of information packets informing people of the proposed change, the bureaucratic process involved, and what they can do to support the effort to oppose Walmart. We continue to receive helpful TV and print media coverage of this "David and Goliath" confrontation.

Any input would be appreciated.

You can go to walmartwatch.com, and I’m sure the friendly folks at the UFCW will help.

If you don’t want to live near a Wal-Mart, move to Chicago—the Land of the Stinking Onion.

I suppose an empty lot, and the lighter traffic associated with an vacant lot is preferrable to the commerce and jobs that the new Walmart facility would bring to the community?

Why would you want to? If there are nearby Walmarts and the area can’t support another one then it will close soon enough. Let the invisible hand work its course!

Does the Walmart want to build a super store, then close one of the other stores (2 miles away as you put it)? Sometimes Walmart has done that to consolidate a couple of smaller stores to a more serviceable location.

Buy the land from Walmart so you can do with the land what you wish.

Don’t forget to add Section 8 Federal Housing projects to the neighborhood as well.

Wal-Mart is great. Why would you oppose it?

Notwithstanding The People of WalMart.

Would you prefer a Home Depot or Lowes instead?
How about a Sam’s in stead of Wal-Mart?
Or maybe a Strip Mall full of Tatoo parlors and head shops?
Or possibly a used car lot with garish feather signs and salesmen dressed as chickens?
Or a Chic-Fil-A?...............
