ST. LOUIS, Mich. -

Friends and neighbors in a mid-Michigan community are rallying behind owners of a golden retriever that was fatally shot by a police officer.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports supporters gathered Tuesday at the home where the dog named Scout lived in St. Louis, about 50 miles north of Lansing.

Mike Goetzinger says the officer had "no reason" to kill the dog owned by his brother Brian Goetzinger and his family. They're planning a protest and vigil Wednesday.

A local family is still shocked after what happened to their beloved pet. They say their dog was shot and killed at the hands of a police officer.

The shooting happened Saturday in St. Louis, Mich., in Gratiot County.

Lori Walmsley, a neighbor of the family who lost their pet, says she saw the incident.

Walmsley says she was outside playing with her own dog when her neighbor’s golden retriever, Scout, ran over into her yard. She says she called the dog over to play, which Scout did, and then Scout ran back over back into his own yard. That’s when Walmsley says a police officer showed up.

Walmsley said the officer asked if the was dog hers. She said “no,” but told the officer Scout wasn’t dangerous. She says the officer tried to catch the dog, who apparently didn’t want to be caught. The dog tried to run away and when cornered by the officer, let out a little growl. Walmsley says she couldn’t believe what happened next.

“I heard ‘pop pop pop pop pop,’ and I thought, ‘what is going on,’ and I [saw] the St. Louis Police Department standing over my dog,” said Scout’s owner.

“He just started shooting him, he just kept shooting him in the head,” said Walmsley. “I said, ‘What are you doing? He’s just a puppy!’”

The dog was taken to the vet were it later died.

The witness says the officer wasn’t provoked and she doesn’t feel his reaction was warranted. Scout’s owners were inside their house during the incident.

Because they assume they’re at the right address, that everything inside wants to kill them, and that drugs are being flushed down the toilet right now.

Either that or they like dress-up and making their toys go “Blammo!”

More evidence the police are out of control and intentionally disregarding any sense of law and order. Protesting doesn’t mean anyone will be held accountable and the actions stopped. They are trying to incite us.

I’ve known too many cops who are cowards until they put on that badge and strap on a gun. They’re itching to shoot something. I’m not saying all cops. But I do wonder why all cops aren’t tested for mental stability.

I will never trust any cop I encounter. Ever.

They’ve brought this on themselves.

If cops were tested for good sense then they wouldn’t follow the asinine policies of the chiefs and mayors.

The cops are simply (or is it simple) cowards.

Every dog is a threat to them.

Listen to their midnight donut bull sessions at the local convenience store.Like just about every part of government they no longer serve the citizen ,they serve themselves.

Put the blame where it belongs - on the cops who carry out these actions and the cop unions that go to bat for them.

It's way too convenient to lay the blame on the higher ups.

It’s a tatic of psychological warfare against the population. Some people distain weakness they see in the public and they get off on the power to abuse them.

When libs are in charge Americans are constantly disrespected, cut down, divided and hated. It becomes the spirit of the whole government in the way it interacts with citizens. We’ve never had so many cruel people in power who got away with it like this.

I hate to see the dogs killed and the broken hearts of the families. It’s just mean spirited. Police officers survived just fine when they were not this careless and we had a kind and cooperative culture. Alot has changed in ten years and it is not for the better.
