In all fairness, what we are calling socialism isn’t entirely accurate, because it is actually a combination of three things: traditional socialism, national socialism (fascism), and international socialism.
Traditional socialism does try to nationalize “all the means of production”, absorb all organizations, and strive to the one (political) party state.
But the great laboratory for traditional socialism, intensely watched by socialists around the world, Lenin’s Russia, was such an abject failure in every particular that even pragmatic Lenin discarded most of it in favor of better systems. However, his replacement, Stalin, decided to force through traditional socialism at whatever cost, and in completely defiance and disregard as to whether it worked or not. Or who it hurt. It killed millions.
And while the useful leftist idiots tried to embrace Stalinism, the smarter socialists decided they needed a new model. And right then, national socialism was all the rage, and seemed terribly efficient (though that was all smoke and mirrors).
So “Ol’ Frank” Roosevelt adopted a whole bunch of fascist economic ideas, and tried to integrate them into traditional socialist thought. The largest of these “public-private partnerships” still exists today in the American agricultural sector.
After the war, National Socialism was somewhat out of favor, but a new type of socialism was emerging. It actually started after WWI with the League of Nations, as a philosophy, but really got its legs after WWII. It was International Socialism.
Today it thrives in the Socialist International association of political parties from around the world, which the US Democrat party embraces, but unofficially, as “socialism” is still political suicide in the US.

And in the US, socialist internationalism is supported by an enormous network of organizations, “think tanks”, “billionaire clubs”, and members of both political parties. It is far more subtle than either traditional socialism or national socialism, using concealment, deceit and guile masterfully.
In any event, this is why it is so difficult to assign traditional socialism to Obama, because that is only part of where he is coming from. He also wants to include some bits of fascist economics, but he mostly wants to advance the agenda of the international socialism.
Socialism=good for backward societies who has no conception of liberties and personal responsibility. I prefer socialist Afghanistan, Iraq and Lybia other this mess they have anyday.
Socialism=bad and a national suicide for any advanced society. There is no reason to start with it in America but it was started and progressing.
All those damn nitwits who would vote for Obama! This is incredible. Democrats and republicans have a lot to worry about. We cannot open the door to these nut jobs for another four years! You can’t run the US like the stink pile Chicago or gag-a-minute San Francisco! Damn the media for treating Obama just like an ordanary option to vote for. What crap!!
I like to ask pro-Socialist why they like a system that may have to lock them in, as with Communism.
When I was living in Slovakia, I often went to a spot on the Danube that happens to be directly across the river from Austria.
It was a popular spot for those willing to die in their attempt to leave.
The old concrete building with 3 gun ramps is still there, along with a monument, listing many of those that died as they tried to leave Communism.
That’s not counting the Wars, either. Seriously.
It is the "evolution" of the People going from Free People to Slaves to Pets to Livestock that only exists for the benefit of the elite...
