Spray stops bananas breathing through their skin and kills the bacteria that make them rot
It is derived from shrimp and crab shells
Growers, supermarkets, even consumers could one day buy the experimental spray
A spray that stops bananas from rapidly turning to mush is being developed by scientists.
When used to coat green bananas, it slowed their ripening and so kept them fresh for almost a fortnight.
By contrast, supermarket-bought bananas often go brown and soggy within two or three days.
It is believed that the spray could help save some of the 1.6million bananas thrown away in Britain every day.
Dr Xihong Li, who made the spray from chitosan, a substance derived from shrimp and crab shells, said: We found that by spraying green bananas with a chitosan aerogel, we can keep bananas fresh for up to 12 days.
Once bananas begin to mature, they quickly become yellow and soft, and then they rot.
We have developed ways to keep bananas green for a longer time and inhibit the rapid ripening that occurs.
Such a coating could be used at home by consumers, in supermarkets or during shipment of bananas.

2 or 3 days? They look fine and not too yellow at the store and by the time I’m washing them (I wash everything) they are already looking bruised. What’s up with that?
Yeah, because food in the 1850s was so much safer and better, if you don't count the ergot fungus outbreaks, milk fever, bad meat, and high number of food poisoning deaths, and little stuff like that.
Food fetishists are a half bubble out of plumb.

They’ll last a fortnight, that is funny.

Aw, that's a shame. |
They downt know 'ow t'make 'nana bread?
Don't interfere.
They are also generally pretty clueless about the real history of food.
I should have compassion, but I just tend to point and laugh.

Think: Sex toys.
why not just eat em?
That's the hardest thing for nanny staters (including food fetishists) to do. In fact, they don't.
There should be a law, and men with guns to enforce it.... ;)

I noticed this with bananas recently. Appear to be just turning yellow from green, by a day or two, peal them and they are bruised in inner core already rotting. Sliced them and ate for 2 days, 2nd day I felt sick from them. No more of those for me.
yeah chickens rinsed with Clorox are so much better
Try the gentle fabric cycle. Much gentler wash action.
I think it was Michael Savage who pointed out that morality has shifted from sex to food. A housewife in the 1950s, unless Kosher and Jewish, didn’t care where her food came from or its ingredients, but was careful on staying chaste until marriage and faithful while married. Food was free for all while sex was constrained. Now we worry about whether it is locally grown, organic, have fights over vegetarian and vegan as holier than thou, but sex is a free for all.
We moved our morality from the bedroom to the kitchen.
All I need to know.

It is. Bananas should be vegetarian. What a concept!!
You might try cooking the chickens
Why should fruit be tainted with fish parts?
|
Humans should be omnivorous. |
Don't like it? Don't buy it.
Make your food fetish public? Expect pointing and laughing.
Personally, my situation is that I don't buy many bananas, never buy green bananas, and eat them the afternoon I buy them. I may not be around for green bananas to ripen. ;)

I didn’t realize that vegetarians ate banana peels. I’m sure they’ll provide some expensive organic option for the billions of vegetarians.
Doesn’t sound Kosher to me.
You misunderstand, I’m saying eat them instead of spraying them.
Why let them sit on your counter for two weeks. Go buy a few bananas and eat them over the next 2-3 days. Seems simple, no fish parts required.
What about pointed sticks?
Says you. Other might disagree. Don’t get your fish on my fruits!
Does it work on anything else?
:-O
Just label the junk so I can avoid it.
I'll stick with science.
/johnny
That would make too much sense , I guess ;p
Tainted? Pretty pejorative language there. Besides, the fruit isn't exposed to the fish parts. The skin is.
If you only knew what happened to your veggies and fruits on the way to the market from the organic farm....

“You might try cooking the chickens”
And just how is a geek supposed to make a living with unhealthy chickens?
|
They might but then they'd be wrong. |
Just being vegan isn't a fetish. Where is your mind at? And I've never heard of anyone laughing.
Stuff like this is why people buy organic.
You eat the banana skins?
No, but its not my job to go around correcting ignorance all the time ;p
Like it wouldn’t get into the fruit
Once the banana breaks from hard green it is just a matter of time. The yellower they get, the faster they respirate, the more ethylene gas they release. The more ethylene gas the faster they go. Its a viscous cycle till the end !! Gentle handling and washing will buy you a day or two. The green veggie fresh bags will buy you a few more.
The banana industry will not allow this to happen. Their sales would be cut by half if all the bananas that were sold were actually eaten.
Organic is literally, bullshit.
I've been in the food business for years. You have no clue what happens to your food from the field to your plate.
You are going to die, even if you don't smoke, drink, eat meat, or whatever. You, me, everybody.
Being uptight about it, and making your family and friend's lives miserable isn't a benefit to society.
Vegans are a tiny but vocal minority.

I see the British haven't discovered Banana Bread.
SAVE THE BANANAS
You are wrong about organics, but whatever , and I really, really don’t care to hear anything from Texas. Go have some beef. I couldn’t care less about your animal “fetishes”. Enjoy.

HAHAHHA! I kill me! |
Why does the FDA have 'fecal splashing' as a contamination vector?
Humans are made of Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, and Oxygen, with some trace elements. We eat carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, with some trace elements.
CHON is what we are, CHON is what we eat.
You make a big fuss about what you eat, making sure it meets certain ritual requirements, but regardless of your angst over it... you are going to get CHON, with trace elements.
Actually, BTW, I prefer pig. Only thing I don't use is the squeal.

Some people will waste anything!
I'm more concerned with the pesticides, antibiotics, and steroids.
I have no problem with other people's choices. I just really prefer my own. I could go on and on about people who are vehemently anti-organics. I believe they are at the heart of it, collectivist. They resent the "bourgeois"- ness of it all. They resent people with the means taking up land and resourses to produce quality, low-yeild foods, when the rest of the world needs to be fed cheaply, with mass-produced, high-yeild foods.
Food "fetishists", as you call them, are anti-proletariat, and are resented for that reason. Don't think this is not the case.
Do you really know what 'organic' means? It means there is a Carbon atom involved.
I don't resent anyone eating whatever they want, even if it's 100 year old duck eggs, or fugu soup, or bird's nest soup.
What I resent is them whining about it.
I made my money off selling fat rich men mostly raw goose liver from force fed geese. That's pretty bourgeois. I'm partial to it myself.
You have NO assurance that what you are eating is what you think it is unless you grow it yourself.

It's for the cheeruns. They needed a new dog anyway.
“Like it wouldnt get into the fruit”
I really doubt it. Banana skins are quite thick, designed by nature to protect the fruit. It’s a gel coating,,,, not gonna penetrate to the fruit. You’re worrying about nothing. And I’m a 90% vegetarian. I eat no meat, except for fish, as it’s just so good for you!
When life gives you brown bananas, make banana bread.
