"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

This is a classic, great, BB lineup...Jack Benny, Suspense, and a Lux(even better with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy)...along with the regulars.

Evening all...

Hello, Friends!

Like you said, Vision, this is a great lineup for this evening. Mr. Walker thinned out the solid comedy from last week.

"Doc" takes a larger, starring role in today's Gunsmoke, but he's not played by Howard McNear in this episode!

Thanks to J. David Goldin's RadioGOLDINdex for these synopses:

7 PM EST Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. November 14, 1955. Part 1. CBS net. "The Broderick Matter." Sustaining. An exciting chase after a charming, beautiful girl. After all, who wouldn't? The system cue has been deleted. Amerigo Moreno (music supervisor), Barbara Eiler, Bob Bailey, Carleton Young, Chester Stratton, Eleanor Audley, Frank Gerstle, Harry Bartell, Herb Ellis, Jack Johnstone (director), John Dawson (writer), John Dehner, Lawrence Dobkin, Marvin Miller, Roy Rowan (announcer), Tony Barrett, Virginia Gregg. 13:56.

7:15 PM Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. November 15, 1955. Part 2. CBS net. "The Broderick Matter." Sustaining. The expenses go way up. It costs money to prove how wrong one man can be. The system cue has been deleted. Amerigo Moreno (music supervisor), Barbara Eiler, Bob Bailey, Carleton Young, Chester Stratton, Eleanor Audley, Frank Gerstle, Harry Bartell, Herb Ellis, Jack Johnstone (director), John Dawson (writer), John Dehner, Lawrence Dobkin, Marvin Miller, Roy Rowan (announcer), Tony Barrett, Virginia Gregg. 13:53.

7:30 PM Dragnet. September 7, 1950. Program #65. NBC net. "The Big Poison". Sponsored by: Fatima. Mr. and Mrs. Apperson, an elderly couple, have disappeared. A bottle of cyanide points to a grim conclusion. Abbreviated closing theme. Jack Webb, Barton Yarborough. 29:54.

8 PM Gunsmoke. December 12, 1953. CBS net. "The Cast". Sponsored by: Post Cereals. Doc tries to save Shell Tucker's wife after she swallows a nail. When he fails to save her, Shell swears revenge on Doc, and almost succeeds! A horse with a broken leg might make him change his mind. Doc is played by Paul Frees, not Howard McNear. An interesting comparison! The script was used on the show again on July 27, 1958 (with Howard McNear as Doc, see cat. #52166), and on the Gunsmoke television series on December 6, 1958. William Conrad, John Meston (writer), Paul Frees, Sam Edwards, Tom Tully, Parley Baer, Georgia Ellis, Rex Koury (composer, conductor), Ken Peters (announcer), Norman Macdonnell (director). 24:35.

8:30 PM The Jack Benny Program For Grape-Nuts and Grape-Nuts Flakes. October 18, 1942. Red net. Sponsored by: Grape-Nuts Flakes, Grape-Nuts Wheat Meal. The program originates from Williams Field, near Chandler Arizona. Jack turns in the Maxwell for the scrap drive! He then dreams that the car is a bomber, with Jack flying it on a mission to bomb Tokyo! Part of the final commercial and the system cue have been deleted. Dennis Day, Don Wilson, Frank Nelson (triples), Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Eddie Anderson, Ed Beloin (writer, performer: doubles), Bill Morrow (writer, performer), Mahlon Merrick (conductor). 29:42.

9 PM Sky King. April 12, 1951. Mutual net. "The Lady Sheriff". Sponsored by: Peter Pan Peanut Butter. Lady Alice has stolen $60,000 in diamonds and escaped on her golden palomino. The trail leads Sky to a plane crash, a gun fight, and plenty of action inside of a diamond mine! Apparently complete but for the system cue. Jack Bivens, Fran Van Hartesfeldt (writer), Mike Wallace, Sidney Renthal (writer), Earl Nightingale, Beryl Vaughn, Dick Stenger (writer). 25:06.

9:30 PM Suspense. July 2, 1961. CBS net. "Night Of The Storm". Sponsored by: Pepsi Cola, NP-27, Instant Tenderleaf Tea. A woman tries to prevent her husband's execution by finding the real killer. Rosemary Rice, Allen Manson, Teri Keane, Lawson Zerbe, Ralph Camargo, Bruno Zirato Jr. (producer, director), Peter Fernandez (writer), Ethel Huber (music supervisor), James Stevens, Stuart Metz (announcer). 25:29.

10 PM The Lux Radio Theatre. June 30, 1941. CBS net. "I Love You Again". Sponsored by: Lux. A comedy case of amnesia. Is the hero a con-man or a wealthy manufacturer of pots...or both? The story was produced again on The Lux Radio Theatre on March 29, 1948 (see cat. #6846). Frank McHugh, Cecil B. DeMille, Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Arthur Q. Bryan (doubles), Betty Ventura, George Wells (adaptor), Charlie Forsyth (sound effects), Sanford Barnett (director), George Oppenheimer (screenwriter), Harry Kurnitz (screenwriter), Leon Gordon (author), Maurine Watkins (author), Kathleen Fitz (commercial spokesman: as "Libby"), Betty Jean Hainey (commercial spokesman), Charles Lederer (screenwriter), Earle Ross (doubles), Ferdinand Munier, Jack Arnold, Jane Morgan, Louis Silvers (music director), Melville Ruick (announcer), Octavus Roy Cohen (author), Rolfe Sedan, Tyler McVey, Lou Merrill, Julie Bannon (commercial spokesman), Dix Davis. 59:23.

Hi, Vision! We’re pretty much caught up, so I’m going back to my regular work schedule with the radio station and writing the columns this week. It was a tough, hot, humid week after the storm!

How was your week?

It went quickly for some reason. The lawn was seeded on Tuesday and today it started to germinate. Which is cool considering how much freakin’ work it is to keep everything wet.

This week I have an office mostly to myself which should be good for getting things done.

What's on the grill tonight?

You have to keep it fairly wet till the roots get going good.

Keith grilled two chickens for us and our neighbors for the Saints game today, so we’ll heat our chicken up later with some sides neighbor Liz made, mustard potato salad and macaroni and cheese.

Are you having leftovers or new?

Nice.

The Skin's gave it to you today huh?

I'm firing up the grill now, some lamb marinated in rosemary, garlic...

Made a cherry crumb for later, looks great! I had to stop myself from eating spoon fulls of the breadcrumbs.

OH, YUM! All of it sounds good. I also like lamb. MMMMM!

Yeah, the Skins did well at 40 pts, but we got 32. Thin defense both ways.

I like Paul Frees’ real announcer voice. He did considerable work for Disney. His is the voice narrating your trip through “The Haunted Mansion” attraction at Disney World -— at least back in the day. Here he’s trying to sound like Howard McNear, I guess.

They should of postponed this episode if Howard McNear wasn't available. That probably wasn't a luxury they had then though. Paul Frees didn't cut it.
