A middle schooler's science project was so alarming to a Manchester, N.H., man that he called police after the contraption landed on his driveway.

Eighth-grader Jack Miron of nearby Walton, N.H., had a grand idea for a science project. The Pine Hill Waldorf student rigged a box that included a video camera, weather recording equipment, flags and a beeping device onto a weather balloon, WMUR reports.

He and his mother launched it from Bedford, N.H., to see what it could record.

That's NOTHING. HERE is real rocket science:

Some guys decided to arrange a strange competition between dark and light beer: which one will fly higher to space?

With video at the link.

DHS or someone will be coming after him. Count on it.

Is there anything with launching a weather balloon into an area where there may be air traffic... only if lots and lots of people start doing it.

If it had been in the vicinity of Charlotte NC...you betcha...they’d already have orange prison suits and prisoner ID #s.

Some rules, but they seem to allow smaller balloons -

If you keep it small, the rules may not apply.

Wow, Bedford, NH to Manchester, NH. Quite a flight - depending on where it was launched, it probably flew less than 5 miles.

I'm honestly surprised they launched it, as the Manchester Airport is quite close. Just think if that thing would have been sucked into a jet engine.

Oh, no! A young man doing an engineering-related project. Quick, shut it down!

Our generation deserves the economic slide.
