The Labor Department announced on Monday that it will be awarding almost $100 million in grant funding to states to prevent layoffs by allowing businesses to pay employees as part-time workers and the federal government will pick up the tab for the cost of a full-time paycheck.
The work-sharing program was passed as part of a Republican-led bill in the House, H.R. 3630, and Senate Amendment 1465 to extend the payroll tax deduction and unemployment benefits. In February 2012, President Barack Obama signed the bill into law, which included the $100 million in funding.
"Establishing or expanding work-sharing programs nationwide will help business owners better weather hard economic times by temporarily reducing their labor costs while still keeping their existing skilled employees," Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis said in the press release announcing the grants. "This program is a win-win for businesses and employees alike."

Let me guess which union represents the employees and which states the jobs are in.....
What the %#@*8$ is this all about, coming from the Repubs!
What a stupid idea - a complete waste of money. I’d like a refund on my federal taxes, please.
And all Congresspeople should be given drug tests! Why not?
Orifinally passed the House with 224 R and 10 Dem votes.
Harry amended it and it then passed the House with 146 R and 147 Dem votes- a majority Democrat bill!
It had the ‘doc fix’ for medicare/medicaid in it and several other ‘must pass’ items.
Thanks to the media Harry was able to do this.
Republicans would be blamed, heck it was never even mentioned by the media that he did this.
Harry is always able to threaten to shut down part of the government if he doesn’t get his goodies, confident that the media won’t report that- and will blame the Republican House if he does shut it down.
Congress’s way is quicker
Another Obamacare loophole, I guess.
THis is like Solyndra, and other “Student Grant” like projects, turning America into some kind of University Campus of elite retards instead of letting business do what it is supposed to do.
Put the Labor Dept. on the short list of govt. agencies to be eliminated.
Not sure if I am reading this right.... But the states are getting unemployment monies to compensate workers they would have laid off..?
So instead of helping the states pay unemployment to a laid off worker they are basically paying to keep someone employed?
If anything it's a novel idea....just tells you how screwed up the economy really is....
This is nutz.
