I didn’t know that this sort of thing was news. Used to happen to our dogs fairly often. The trick we learned is to use heavy scissors or something to clip off the ends of and therefore DEFLATE the quills (partially) before pulling them. Clip ‘em, leave ‘em for a bit (20 mins), then get the pliers and do it all as fast as possible.

499 quills...and it wouldn’t have been newz....but 500 quills brought it to Olympic proportions. :)

Did you ever use the vinegar and baking soda soak to soften them?

The best dog I’ve ever had was a Tri-color Australian shepherd.

Highly intelligent, loveable, ferocious when needed.

He treated my baby as his own...loved her and protected her.

Sounds like an interesting idea, and the farm is long gone, but we were always well aware that it was better to have a dog's snout that looked a little messed up for a couple of days than to have a dog's snout that had foreign objects embedded in it. I would worry therefore that any agent used to deteriorate the proteins in the quill (or keratin?) would bleed down the inside of the shaft and soften up the stuff that needs to be pulled out. The worst thing would be to pull the quill and have some of it still in there, which never happened to us. Funny thing is, if you do it quick, the dogs seem to understand and forgive you right away. The trick for us was to snip the ends off the quills to let them deflate and - maybe - let the barbs back down a little. It's also possible that the dogs' white blood cells and pus were also attacking those things, lubricating the extraction.

I miss those dogs.

Bella “took the brunt of the attack” because no doubt she was doing the brunt of the attacking. The porcupine has no interest in “attacking” a predator like a bulldog - it wants to get away.

Bulldog’s have gladiator blood - and a little pain will NOT stop them.

Poor Bella! Hope she is OK - Bulldogs are very loving and lovable little gladiators!

Any porkie we find near the camp [usually found by the side of the road licking a wood post]

They love to eat any wood that has soaked up salt the highways use in the winter. Kids at our camp kept peeing on the outhouse seat, they ate most of that up.

Yes, they are after the salt and a slug in-da-head when they are near the camp, as our dogs are about.
