Americans are the the least likely to suffer from "green guilt" about their environmental impact, despite trailing the rest of the world in sustainable behavior, according to a new National Geographic survey.
This year's Greendex report, conducted by the National Geographic Society and the research consultancy GlobeScan, also found that Americans are the most confident that their individual actions can help the environment. (National Geographic News is a division of the Society.)

"There's a disconnect there, and we hope the Greendex helps shed light on it," said Eric Whan, GlobeScan's director of sustainability.
"In our culture of consumption, we've sort of been indoctrinated to believe that we can buy ourselves out of environmental problems," said Whan, who's based in Toronto, Canada, another country ranked low in the survey.

This year Americans ranked last in sustainable behavior, as they have every year since 2008. Just 21 percent of Americans reported feeling guilty about the impact they have on the environment, among the lowest of those surveyed.
Yet they had the most faith in an individual's ability to protect the environment, at 47 percent.
Consumers in India, China, and Brazil led the pack, with Greendex scores in the high fifties. Paradoxically, many Indians, Chinese, and Brazilians reported feeling the most guilt about their environmental impact and had the least confidence that their individual actions can help the environment.

I've heard of 'green with envy', like everybody else is green with envy at USA.
Got no such thing as green guilt. The recycle bin the company gave me remains far under my desk and is used for storage. We recycle cans at home only because we pay by the bag for trash pickup but not for recycled garbage. I probably committed a crime by buying oil based polyurethane out of state and transported it back home for my hardwood floors. The state in which I reside is only allowed to sell Low VOC products. It happens to be my career expertise and I know the good stuff works better.
I went through that green garbage back in the 70s and i ain’t buying it again. Truck loads of wet papers sitting and rotting etc. That being said, I do try to only put natural stuff in my house. But I am not replacing a paid for car with a smart car, or reusing cloth grocery bags which are filthy and disgusting and even the sackers here loathe them.
Scored a 33 and no guilt whatsoever.
I work here in liberal Hollywood and only the white liberals use that putrid cloth bag. The mexicans are just laughing at these morons.

Global temperatures have been declining for 2000 years when you don't use the fraudulent data used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to start the global warming hysteria.

I dropped my National Geo subscription more than a dozen years ago. Had been a subscriber for 3 decades, and just couldn’t take their extremist Leftism and overdone watermelon Green nonsense any longer.
I know. I used to love the great photography and read the stories around the world in the early 80s.
Then it changed.
I couldn’t get the Wife to go along, so she must be a Gross Polluter.
Well, I got a GreenDex score of 50, which accordingly would put me on the global high end of environmental virtue. Why? Every question they asked about what I did specifically for the environment I answered with a negative. The only real question I answered in a way that they would find positive is when I responded that I drive but 5000 miles per year (which is true, I hardly drive at all).
I guess that’s all they care about. Which explains why China and India score so “high” in their ranking.
Oh, I guess I also truthfully said that I don’t have an air conditioner in my home - I can’t help that I live in a locale that never gets above 80.

1) there is no public transportation here
2) there is no recycle program here
3) you better believe I’m turning on the A/C in 100 degree weather

China is the most fake green country, but the results speak for themselves. There is some sort of green propaganda on many of their products for internal consumption but people raised under Communism don’t buy into the propaganda any more than conservatives do.

I just realized I haven't washed and waxed my SUV in a while. Perfect motivation.
I got a 34. Unlike hippies, if I need say, a tomato I could care less if it was grown in a local organic farm two miles away or two states away and had to guess on a few.
We are more restricted and pay more to satisfy arbitrary EPA regulations than any nation on earth, while our people are on food stamps and losing their homes. WTH?
Americans are not as easily manipulated by the citizens of the world as are people of other nations.

I use paper AND plastic, use 100 watt Edison Light/Heat bulbs and bought a 4 year old van that gets a little over 18 mpg. Because I only get about half the mileage of a new model T&C, I saved thousands. By getting what is now considered a gas hog, with the amount I drive, I figure it will take over ten years to catch up to my total cost of ownership if I had bought new based on fuel costs.
And, on the subject of formerly good magazines that have gone over to the darkside, did anybody catch the excrement that Popular Science ran a few months ago that totally drank the “global warming were all going to die” Koolaid?

Forty years ago, I figured out that “recycling” consumer products was just a fancy word to get me to stockpile garbage in my house.
I live in a rural area, cut down a lot of excessive growth and burn it every year. Must produce tons of CO2 every year. It has been cooling lately, and this is good for the environment.
I do my best to take a deer and an elk every year. Got a mountain lion a couple of years ago. Again this is good for the environment, and shooting a mountain lion is good for your family and the neighbors.
I learned about conservation and resource management in my teens.
Modern environmentalists are crazy...
The Obama Green program is Green from your pocket into his donors pocket. Carbon exchange relates to the ink and paper exchanged also.
The Siberian fires have contributed more to global warming in one SECOND than I will in my lifetime.
I generally assuage my Green Guilt with a backyard tire fire.
I scored 40 and don’t do squat to help the environment that I’m aware of. I DO choose to do certain things (dial down heat, don’t run the air excessively) but only to keep bills low (raised that way).
I don’t recall any questions about recycling, either. I’ll throw a bottle in the bin ONLY if it’s made convenient for me to do so.

Finger-pointing critics often vilify Americans as the sole cause of global warming. But the typical image of SUV-driving, energy-hogging Yankees may be bogus — a new analysis of U.N. data reveals that U.S. efforts to reduce greenhouse gases actually beat European policies.
“Despite constant criticism from environmental activists at home and across Europe claiming the U.S. government is doing nothing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, new evidence suggests America’s efforts are more effective than those of Europe’s,” according to a study by H. Sterling Burnett of the Dallas-based National Center for Policy Analysis, a nonprofit, nonpartisan research institute.

The Asian-Pacific partnership is a nonbinding plan to cooperate on development and transfer technologies that would enable greenhouse gas reductions.
This article has very little (i.e., none) substance on actual facts.
It is a survey, and how people in different countries chose to answer it.
We (the posters here) are just proud (and making fun of the Greendex) of our redneck attitude.
I think it’s funny the countries who signed Kyoto are bigger polluters than we are.
