Word For The Day, June 19, 2012

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
haboob [huh-boob]
-n
a thick dust storm or sandstorm that blows in the deserts of North Africa and Arabia or on the plains of India.
[18951900; < Arabic habūb a strong wind]
Not making it up:
Haiku fans, Arizona wants 17 syllables on haboob safety

don’t muslim women hide their haboobs in their hijabs?

Here's 'aboob who's somewhat thick & blows a lot of hot air....
that doesn’t look that revealing to me, you see worse on the street on any given day.
Nancy Pelosi and her water war on Central Valley Farmers will create a haboob at the first gust of wind. Everything is so dry out there the sheep in the fields look like they are wearing camo. Their coats match the dirt, and they are barely discernable from a distance. There is no telling what they are eating because there is no green in sight.
The desert sands, blown into oddest places. Cover up your haboobs.
It's way worse than this picture.
Janet Jackson once showed us haboob
Had a wardrobe malfunction on the tube
Half-time, Super Bowl
Half-cleavage for all
What’s next—Lady Gaga shows pube?
There are timed when I wonder why one of those farmers just hasn’t gone up and punched her in the nose.
Hot, dry, desert sands
The winds pick up from the West-
It’s haboob-forming...

We saw acres and acres of dead orchards. Then, next to the dead orchards, there were acres and acres of flourishing orchards. IOW, one field had access to water and the other had none. I’d love to know the story of that. Is water divvied out according to campaign contribution?
But, the sheep were quite remarkable. You could barely make them out in the field, they were so dirty. They looked like rocks scattered across the landscape.
I know that the farmers (they call the “ranchers” in the west) were promised water from the great irrigation districts in the 1940’s. It doesn’t seem fair that they are deprived now. The landscape is green and lush where water is availble; it is dead and dusty where it is not.
Ai Haram, Habibi
Don’t hide your haboobs!
Yes, and she apparently went on her flight with no incident. So, sounds like a case of “famewhore” to me.
you said ha boob.
hehehehehe
someone wanted pix of their haboobs plastered all over the intarwebz.
Try again and think of the victor at Trafalgar.
I may have used up all my smarts this weekend dropping references to the French Revolution, Dante’s Inferno, the Treaty of Versailles, Calvin Coolidge, and a few others I can’t recall right now.
That kind of leaves me with “Beavis and Butthead”
Nelson won the battle of Trafalgar. He was shot and killed, but he won.
Who the heck is Rob Portman and why would I want him as VP?
The thick dusty storm
Raises a big haboob
On the Injun plains.
He’s a genuinely classy guy who could do the job of POTUS tomorrow. House member from 1993 to 2005. One year as Office of Management and Budget 05-06, one year as trade rep. 06-07 Senator elected in 2010.
Little known fact: he played Liberman, Edwards, and Obama in debate prep for presidential and vp debates.
He’s very solid on all the issues but not the most exciting.
And Rush once said his wife is a hoot.
I am a bit biased. I have friends who work for him and he never fails to send letters and or notes when something big happens and I’m on the Christmas card list.
Glad to hear he was in House for years before Senate. Sounds like a good guy. What about charisma? Saw a reference to him being a bore? What was that about?
I’m not going to lie. He’s not Mr. Excitement.
With that said he’s not going to put people to sleep during the debate. But he’s just not as exciting or novel as a lot of the names out thee. (Palin, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal, etc) compared to these he is a boring white guy. But he’s not a cold fish or aloof or a drone.
Been googling him and his wife. Watched a couple of vids. They seem like a lovely couple. She’s quite attractive. Wonder what Rush meant by “hoot”.
He’s married to that chick from the Star Wars sequels, right?
Cloudy and a chance of very welcome rain here-
The haboob of the Obama spinners
Is constantly changing direction-
It encircles the vulnerable ‘rats
Who are in dire need of protection
With Axelrod and Holder’s antics
Fueling the political skinning,
Let’s remember it is only June-
So the fun is just beginning
If they keep using Nixon’s playbook
Enemies list and all that stuff-
Obscuring truth with the hot wind
Known as rhetoric won’t be enough...
Dave,
Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
Ti,
Probably that’s great dinner conversation. I believe Rush was speaking of a Congressional get together he went to back in the mid 1990’s. That and I asked Jane when I met her, but she didn’t say.
Dave again,
Antoher old reference I dropped a lot this weekend was Al Haig “I’m in charge here”
I still like “a black, a woman, 2 Jews and a cripple,” but it’s harder to wedge into a conversation. ;-)
Jindal got his shot at the spotlight giving a rebuttal speech....he failed miserably.
Watching Portman on some vids showed he is polished and mature. I suspect that may well inspire American voters after four years of theO. Grown ups.
Wonder why Rush said hoot and not hot?
SD......nat that portman...er not that portman. Whatever.
She is very beauriful, kind of in a Jackie O sort of way.
She is attractive, and well spoken. One vid I watched was her giving a campaign speech for her husband. Very polished, gracious and engaging. Only watched him in an interview at a bike rally for breast cancer interview. Both were good there.

The European Union is, philosophically, a 1970s solution to a 1940s problem. Except that, in one of those jests the gods are fond of, it seems to be delivering the Continent into the very situation it was explicitly designed to prevent. The ‘tween-wars fascists sold themselves to their peoples by telling them that the world was run by a cabal of sinister foreign bankers. When the neo-nationalist Golden Dawn and the hard-left Syriza parties both reprised this line to such great effect in the recent Greek election, it had the additional merit, as Nixon liked to say, of being true. The euro has made the age-old conspiracy theories real: If you’re a Greek, your world is run by a cabal of sinister foreign bankers the Germans and the other “northern Europeans” who control the European Central Bank, plus their chums at the IMF.
It requires a perverse genius to invent a mechanism designed to consign the horrors of the mid20th century to the trash can of history that winds up delivering you to Mitteleuropa circa 1934.
Wow. He nailed it. 100%
Of course you also have that the Euro was designed to fail, as that failure would force further integration and a “United States of Europe” which was not politically possible pre-crisis.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
Order out of chaos
Manfuactured crisis —> reaction —> predetermined solution
It is difficult, however, to take seriously a political party that sounds like a dish soap or a Chinese restaurant.
I thought they were named after one of those vampire novels the kids are all reading.
Now that you mention it, I think there was one named that in Youngstown back in the day. Could still be for all I know.
Damn you’re hot when you make total complete sense. Also when you wear Daisy Dukes. Now if you could just do both at once...nah, I’d probably drop from overload.
It’s better than the Mormon bashing threads.
Which isn’t saying much.
Yes, these opinions are a kook fringe.
: P
the religion forum is rough. i won’t read the mormon bashing threads because i expect it to be filled with nuts, but when i am reading a thread like the one on Rubio, and see LUNACY run amok, it disheartens me.
I thought I felt that way about Guiliani - that I wouldn’t vote for him no matter what. But, at that time, I thought the worst I had seen was the inept Carter then the corrupt clinton. Now I’ve seen worse - far worse. By now, I would kiss guiliani on the mouth rather than allow my vote to be wasted in the upcoming election.
WOW, i had not thought of that but you are absolutely right. i would gladly vote for giuliani over Obama. and i was VEHEMENTLY opposed to him. i am dumbfounded by those who think that we can survive this menace in the WH for another 4 years and in fact WELCOME his reelection.
