Word For The Day, Thursday, June 14, 2012 - prescind
dictionaries ad nauseam | Flag Day 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

prescind \prih-SIND\, verb
to withdraw one's attention

Example sentences:
If we prescind from the main issue for a moment, there is much to be gained by studying some corollary questions.

"For my purposes, we may happily prescind from the metaphysics."
-- From John Collins' 2011 book The Unity of Linguistic Meaning

Etymology:
"Prescind" derives from the Latin verb "praescindere," which means "to cut off in front." "Praescindere," in turn, was formed by combining "prae-" ("before") and "scindere" ("to cut" or "to split"). So it should come as no surprise that when "prescind" began being used during the 17th century, it referred to "cutting off" one’s attention from a subject. An earlier (now archaic) sense was even clearer about the etymological origins of the word, with the meaning "to cut short, off, or away" or "to sever." Other descendants of "scindere" include "rescind" and the rare "scissile" ("capable of being cut").

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

After Obama repeated prescinded his laser like focus on jobs, he has had to repeatedly pivot back to it. Whatever. He doesn’t get that job creation happens when businesses do not feel the government’s boot on their neck.

If we had prescinded Obamacare, then we wouldn’t have to worry about rescinding it.

This years Presidential election is of such signal importance to the future of our Nation and the Freedoms we enjoy that no citizen can indulge in the luxury of prescindment from judgment with respect to the merits of the candidates. In other words, get your bloated carcass to the polls and vote!

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

When Clinton lied about Lewinsky, he grinned
But when he praised Mister Romney, he sinned
They called him old and uncouth
For having uttered the truth
From this election, they’ll make Bill prescind

Although the MSM has prescinded their vetting of Obama, Krauthammer has hit on the one thing they can't get past the American voters. Americans know Obama has been president for the last 3 and a half years, not Bush.
