This column is about politics. Today, its not. Still, theres Watergate, Paul Revere, Edward R. Murrow, fighting for your right, so, kinda still.
Adam Nathaniel Yauch died Friday. If youre age 16-66 maybe 106 you know him as MCA, one-third of the Beastie Boys. He was 47. Way too young. But gone.
Now, half-white Barack Obama (exactly my age) didnt say a word, even though he was talking to college kids that day, but make no mistake, MCA was no JayZ or Kanye West. This guy was the real deal, groundbreaker, up from his bootstraps, Brooklyn boy made good. Funny the coolest president ever doesnt say a word about the passing of MCA. Weird and kinda sad, actually.

Ffffuubbboooo
He didn’t look like Obama’s son.
As someone in the 16-to-66 age bracket, I had never heard of him. May have vaguely heard of the Beastie Boys but couldn’t have told you anything about them. Some kind of music group I assume. American? British? Other?
While Obama happens to have the same skin color of blacks and looks black, he’s never lived the life of a typical black man in the United States. And the irony of this is that the same blacks that voted for this guy would be the same people who would have ridiculed him for not being black had he lived in their neighborhood or gone to school with them.
If Obama had a son he would not have looked like MCA.
I grew up in NYC and Beastie Boys ruled. I was right of that age when they blew up. Am Italo American and most of my buddies were Jewish. Beasties were really awesome.
Posse on Broadway? Buttermilk biscuit? Fight for your right to party??
Brass Monkey, Pal Revere, Sabotage, Intergalactic , Check it Out.
So many great songs they made!
NO SLEEP TILL BROOKLYN!!!!
Why MCA?
Considering Obama has a comment on jay z , kanye, etc, funny how he does not say a word about a white icon of hip hop MCA passing.
Beastie Boys were, are, and will always be legends.
Man, great memories of high school. Graduated in ‘89..
Wasn’t there a movie that opened, and smashed the box office records, this weekend starring the beastie boys????
I’ve heard of them, but don’t know anything about them.
Are the Beastie Boys played on Top 40 stations? Or the hard rock, heavy metal stations? What kind of music are they?
And what’s with “MCA”? Is that a stage name of some kind?
I guess I’m out of it on the popular culture...............

I graduated in 1992. Great fng times. Late 80s were the BEST! Metal, hip hop, rock were all amazing.
Don’t forget Hey Ladies!, High Plains Drifter, and Girls.
It took me a while to warm to the Beastie Boys. I didn’t like “Fight for Your Right”, because at first I didn’t get the joke that is was aping the same kind of BS music I hated too. By the time Ill Communication came out, though, I was hooked. The music video for Sabotage is brilliant.
I saw one of their last videos called ALIVE on YouTube. Really was perfect beastie boys video grasping the NYC feel and their music.
Your comment is one of the best I have ever read on FR. Are you Rush Limbaugh in disguise? These are the kind of ideas that need to be brought into the campaign!
Kerry King, guitarist of my favorite band Slayer, did the guitar work on Licenese ti I’ll for 200 dollars.
Too bad it’s not the DMCA.
I'm in that age group and I've never heard of him. I've heard the Beastie Boys mentioned in the news from time to time, and I figure they must be some disco, punk rock or hip-hop group.
Metallica, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, etc.. good times..
Graduated in 91. I remember playing the song cookie puss in my bedroom in 8th grade and my dad coming up and breaking the cassette tape in half. Great stuff, even some of their deep cuts like eggman, and shadrach. Sabotage was such a funny video too. Hilarious stuff.
My favorite rap song from that period:
Wally Rap--Wally George
Class of 1985 and the Beastie Boys were huge from then through the college years.
I’m not sure what you’d call this, but if you have a half hour to waste it is...odd. (language)

nope....never heard that before.
or any of the others linked on this thread.
sorry.
MCA is definitely a stage name. Not to be confused with
MCA Records—now part of Universal Music group. You may have had some albums with that rainbow logo—Elton John,
Lynyrd Skynyrd.
But, not the same as the musician/singer.
He’s white, Jim.
Bingo. FUBO!!!!!
I watched 15 mins. That’s a trip..
It gets even more odd.
Thru the five boroughs. Monumental!!!
Having spent a great deal of time in urban settings and having talked to many good albeit very democrat Americans who happen to be black, I can tell you that Barack Obama would have been ostracized for not living the black life style. And for talking like a white man. And for wanting to further his education and associating primarily with whites with the exception of his radical mentor Frank Marshall Davis.
And thank you for your obtuse and sarcastic comments but this issue is one that many have brought up who aren’t conservative nor republican.

Word that. Whenever the punks try to tell me my grandpa music sucks I put on some Sabotage and tell them to suck it. Shuts them up every time.
The live version where they play the instruments is even better.
That is why I always loved the beasties - they started out as punk rockers, went to 80’s glam rap, then got alot more technical w the masterpiece Paul’s Boutique, and then showed a tremendous amount of range thereafter.
The other great thing about the Beasties is that they have something for everyone. I am an extremne 80’s thrash metal fan, but still like most of the beasties’ music.
R.I.P
Sabotage is still one of the best videos ever made.
And to me - I like the live version even better:

Its news because like Andrew Breitbart said, the culture is just as important as anything.
Beastie Boys were legnds and made many masterpieces that influenced tens of millions of people and they were not gutter rats like most rappers.
I can still repeat almost every lyric off of License to Ill.
White and (half) Jew....No memorial for you!!!! RIP, MCA.....you were awesome.....Mhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm, drop!
WHY IS WHAT?
Had Kanye or Jay Z died we all know obama would have sent message out to the peeps.
FFFUUUBBBOOOO!!!!!!!!
FFFFUUUUMMMOOO!!!!!!!
FFFFUUUUEEEEHHH!!!!!!
FFFUUUUJJJNNn!!!!!!
FFFFUUUUUJJJJBBBB!!!!
