Fewer hats means more skin cancer. I wonder if any experts have made that connection.
I for one have always been glad to live in a time when headgear is worn only by utilitarian necessity or personal expressive choice.
Hat are cool and women used to wear hats that required a hat pin which could come in handy as a tool of improvised self defense.

The Obama movements supposition is that Americans are domestic cowards, and can be made fearful and shaped like a herd of docile cows. Is that supposition now true? So far it has proven true according to the Alinsky plan. The Supreme Court stands in Obamas way, and he is prepared to go against any ruling they make on the basis of “ Those Judges were not elected.”
We are in for a very rough ride.Obama knows full well the Obamacare Health Bill mandates are unconstitutional. So does the court. I believe a power struggle is now happening behind the scenes between the executive and judical branches of gvernment. The stupified Congress looks on in horror , at a time when they should be censuring the illegitimate presidents comments publicly and legislatively, and convening a military committee to secure the nation and the safety of the Supreme Court, and the independence of the States.
The executive branch of government is now a loose cannon on the deck of the ship of state.Its time for Congress to act
to tie it down.
BINGO! In 1960 my Dad, uncles, and friends fathers had hats. In 1961 only one bald uncle still wore one. Mom said it was a fad (going hatless), but that was the end. Hat's made you look old and since JFK, every middle aged man wanted to look young.
They'd get you strip searched by the TSA today.......LOL!
My God, the same leftist crap still goes on in that park to this day. Now the OWS terrorists, endorsed by Despot Mike Bloomberg, are camped out there. I’ve been wearing hats for about 40 years. Back then they were chiefly of the fishing hat or ball cap variety. I did wear a western hat to my senior photograph session in HS. They wouldn’t let me wear it for the photo but I did wear the colonel tie. Today I have 50 or more hats/caps in straw and felt and woven fabric. I’ve worn one to each of the Free Republic gatherings in DC. (1998 March for Justice, 2001 Inaugural Ball, the event a couple of years ago in Arlington VA)
I love hats. Fedoras and Trilbys especially. I also like caps. I still have my dad’s old driving cap somewhere. I don’t do the “newsboy cap”, though. I like the look, but in my area it seems to be a popular garment of choice for the OWS/granola/fleabag types.
When I was a child, remembering only back to early 50s with my parents, both men and women wore hats.
Today, I never go out without a hat, but I am bald ;)

JFK would have wore a hat as well if he was bald but he still had the hairline of a 10 year old into his 40s. For some reason certain Irish men never lose a follicle of hair nor even go gray. Reagan was another example.

The real reason most men stopped wearing fedoras is they thought they looked silly in them. Men found out they can look silly without having to wear fedoras. I think wearing bermuda shorts and fedoras just didn't look good. They found baseball caps went well with shorts, knobby knees, and black sneakers. They still looked silly but not quite as silly. So men kept the bermuda shorts and ditched the fedoras. That's the real reason folks, bermuda shorts.
When I’m not inside I’m in a hat of some type. I have a water proof fedora 100% wool that’s at least 15 years old. I call it my rain hat. Still as good today as when new.
I could never stand wearing a hat or ballcap. As a kid I got plenty of grief growing up on the farm by everyone.

Modern restaurants — and even churches == have no place for a man’s hat. A man must remove his hat to eat, or in church — unless he’s a Texan. There are no hat racks, or little clips on the backs of the pew, anymore. So, what do you do with it indoors?

You’re right.
The answer as to why people don’t wear hats anymore is simple; we live indoors all the time now, or are protected from the weather by air conditioning, driving everywhere, and etc.
At that time people were outdoors more. They walked city streets to go somewhere instead of driving. They were more subject to the weather, hot sun and rain etc. So they needed hats.
The author uncovered proof that hat-wearing was on its way out since the early 20th century at least for mostly obvious reasons. One reason I hadn't thought of was resentment over the explosion in hat-checking whenever you entered a restaurant, bar, or club. Men recognized a racket when they saw it and refused to play the game.
Also, Jack Kennedy did indeed wear a hat. He didn't like being photographed wearing one as it altered his appearance drastically by making his eyes too prominent or so claimed the author.
Interesting...all the examples of hatted men are Socialist Rallies, then the ultimate blame for hatlessness is attributed to Ike, The Automobile, The National Highway System, and INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM to travel in one’s own vehicle as opposed to the Collective Public Transportation System.
So are hats the the symbol of slavery to the collective (like BORG Implants) and Hatlessness the symbol of True American freedom?

In the original Charlie Chan novel (1920s?), a proper Bostonian is sent by his family to retrieve his wayward aunt from Hawaii.
It's train to SF, and boarding the ship to Hawaii, a young coed gives him grief about his top hat hat box - "...in the tropics? Really?" He chucks it over the side, and immediately regrets getting rid of the box, a present from his mother, but relieved he doesn't have to haul it, and its contents around.

I remember my parents both wearing hats in the 50’s and into the 60’s. My father had some of those gray Fedora types - he was in sales and later an executive.
And being a Marine for almost 30 years, meant a lot of time under hats for me. Only we called them covers.
Now, as an ORF (Old Retired Fart), my hats are mostly baseball caps...Go Cubs Go...or wide brimmed to provide protection from the sun.
We have the little clips on the back of our pews. Of course the pews have been there for about 80 years. Removed and partly refinished when the floor was redone but the same massive oak pews from the early 20thc.

I could never stand wearing a hat or ballcap. ....That is the only bitch I had while in the military. Until an Phillipino Ranger gave me an Aussie style hat, which was never questioned by my superiors.
Pictures like that are always cool. I always notice how skinny everyone is.
100 years later: the hats may be gone but the truth remains: those who most loudly promote the cause of “Labor” are those least likely to actually desire work.
