"He wanted his brain to be studied for possible damage due to NFL injuries."

Seau is the second player to commit suicide recently. Ray Easterling killed himself too. He was a complainant in an NFL concussion lawsuit. The link below is to a story on it.

The NHL is also dealing with this, in the last off-season 3 current or former NHL players committed suicide.

Hadn’t heard about Duerson. I just posted a note regarding Ray Easterling’s suicide in April. Concussion related.

Not really. It is not easy, but entirely possible. Has been done many times. Usually the shot is to the face though.

Interesting that you mention the NHL. I was wondering what the rate of concussions in the NHL were before they wore helmets, compared to afterwards. I was born and raised in Rochester, NY, and in the 60's, used to go to the Amerks games (AHL). The players didn't wear helmets, and the goalies were without masks. That was back when Gerry Cheevers was their goalie, and Don Cherry played for them. At one of the games, Cheevers took a hit on the underside of his chin with a puck and had to have several stitches.

I found out several years ago that Tim Horton was a cousin of mine. He had passed away by then. Killed in a car accident on his way home from a game. Up until I started doing research on my mother's side of the family, I had never heard of him or the restaurant chain he was part of.

I can’t believe all you people! Lean against it and use a stick. DUH!

Sad way to go. He needed some help and didn’t get it from the NFL.

What is the incidence of concussions for rugby players?

Far less given the vast difference in the contact collisions between the two sports.........

this was discussed about a week ago on a thread about NFL concussions.........

I childhood friend used a shotgun and put it in his mouth.

I did as well, but she put it in her mouth.

A dud. I’d have tried again, but I ran out of shells.

My 31 year old nephew took his own life two years ago, come June. To this day, I still grieve over his loss. We were very close; yet not close enough to have an impact on preventing what was to come the night we lost him.

I know that NFL players go to early graves — I didn’t think that suicide was a primary cause though.

So, in the CA sidebar Obi-Wan Kenobi getting arrested in a hit-and-run is "News" ... Octomom filing bankruptcy is "News" ... Seau's suicide is shuffled off to "Chat" so it can't be highlighted for the CA sidebar ...

Gotta love the Mods these days.

Plus in rugby, head hits (both using the head and going for the head) are, as far as I know, illegal and grounds for ejection. Too many football players were taught to lead with the head, or tackle in a way that caused head-to-head clashes. There’s no helmet in the world that can prevent effects from those building up over time.

The sport that causes me to be amazed is Australian Rules Football. Those guys jump like basketball players and hit like American football players...with no pads at all. I wonder if they have similar concussion issues to the NFL/NHL, because man, those guys HIT.
