Apprehensions of Mexicans trying to cross the border illegally have plummeted by more than 70% in recent years
The number of Mexican immigrants living illegally in the U.S. has dropped significantly for the first time in decades a new study suggests.
The figures represent a dramatic shift as many illegal workers, already in the U.S. and seeing few job opportunities, are returning to Mexico.
The analysis of census data from the U.S. and Mexican governments finds that roughly 6.1 million unauthorized Mexican immigrants were living in the U.S. last year. That's down from a peak of nearly 7 million in 2007.
The Pew Hispanic Center report attributed much of the drop to a weak U.S. economy, which has shrunk construction jobs attractive to Mexican workers. But increased deportations, heightened U.S. patrols and violence along the border as well as Mexico's declining birth rate, also have played a role.
The report is based on the Center’s analysis of data from five different Mexican government sources and four U.S. government sources.
In a breakdown of key points, the Pew Hispanic Center pointed out that apprehensions of Mexicans trying to cross the border illegally have plummeted by more than 70% in recent years, from more than 1 million in 2005 to 286,000 in 2011—a likely indication that fewer unauthorized immigrants are trying to cross.
Instead, deportations of unauthorized Mexican immigrants have risen to record levels, researchers report. Nearly 400,000 undocumented immigrants were deported by U.S. officials in 2010.
Of that number, 73 percent were Mexicans.
Most undocumented immigrants sent home to Mexico say they plan to try and return to the U.S. However, a growing number said they would not try to come back to the U.S. according to the research.
According to a survey by Mexican authorities of repatriated immigrants, 20% of labor migrants in 2010 said they would not return, compared with just 7% in 2005.
This is the Obama method of getting rid of illegals, make job prospects in the US worse than they are in Mexico.

Suggests? But can it prove it? No. This from a pro-hispanic group. They are merely trying to minimize the illegal immigration issue. I am extremely suspicious of these numbers/claims. I don't see any slackening in illegal immigration ... well, anywhere.

If that's true - and I'd put that probability in the single digit percentage range - it is only a sign of just how badly hussein has eff'd up the economy.

Mexico should build light bulb factories and toilet factories, and sell those products on the black market, to Americans.
Mexico should also build oil refineries and coal fired electricity generating plants and sell us the energy!

Anyone who believes that ILLEGAL aliens answer the census questions truthfully is a fool and it is US census information they have based this on.

The conclusion is based simply on the malfeasance of the Obama administration by refusing to enforce immigration laws.
If you don't actively try to apprehend anyone committing a crime, you can't turn around and say crime is dropping.
It's merely going unimpeded.
Just an anecdotal from SW VA. I’m noticing A LOT fewer of them here than there were, say back in 2007/2008. You know you’re in a damn depression when Mexico is a preferable place to work/live than here.
Back in 2007 I’d sometimes angrily wonder what damn country I was in, because sometimes I’d be out shopping and not be within earshot of anyone speaking English. I’d say they have dropped by AT LEAST 50%. Probably closer to 75-80%. The visible reduction has been that dramatic.
not sure I trust this report. There is less of an economic reason for illegals to come here, but once they get here, they still get most everything for free.
If, that is a big if, if they are returning home, they’ll be back in larger numbers if Obama is reelected for the coming amnesty.
