COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A student pilot was arrested after he tried to steal an airplane from Compton/Woodley Airport.

Sheriff's officials said 25-year-old Troy Long of Bellflower attempted to steal the two-seat Cessna 152 on Friday. Authorities say Long entered the airport office and began taking keys for airplanes. He then pulled a gun on airport workers when they tried to stop him.

He got into the Cessna and started the engine, but he was stopped from going anywhere by a chain connecting the plane to the tarmac.

Always, ALWAYS - do a preflight inspection. Chained planes don’t fly.

;-)

Sounds like he needed some more lessons.

They never used the word tarmac in this country until Billy Carter peed on it.

Must have thought the tie down chain was airplane bling!

Ya, I did that once. Didn’t check all the tie-downs and sure enough, the tail chain was still connected. Tried to taxi out and whump!

I wonder where he was going and who he thought he was going to outrun with that plane? Any decent sized motorcycle goes a lot faster than that plane does.

But they don't fly, and getting in the way of the prop is a losing proposition.

I got distracted once during my preflight in Cheyenne. Somehow missed the tiedown on the left wing, and the tower thought it was really funny when my request for taxi clearance resulted in a left 360....

I don’t know of many good eateries in Compton, but there’s a Louisiana Fried Chicken eatery on Alondra that’s catty-corner from the airport. Much better than KFC.

If you are going to steal a plane, why steal a 152? Go for something bigger and faster.

no bikes don’t fly but a 152 is going nowhere fast. If I were going to steal a plane I would be looking for something a lot faster with a lot better range.

If I were going to steal a plane

Sometimes you gotta steal what is available.
