It's not where one might expect to see a Prussian-style castle with towering spires and gargoyles carved in stone.
But a 19th century abode steeped in World War I history is now on the market in Denver, Colorado.
The Richthofen Castle, built by the uncle of fighter pilot Baron Manfred von Richthofen, or the 'Red Baron', is selling for $3.7 5million.
The home, built in 1887 by architects Jules Jacques Benedict and Maurice Bixco for Baron Walter von Richthofen, is modeled according to the original Richthofen Castle in Germany - Richthofen's ancestral home.

Probably 0.0000008% of that castle is original due to the 90000000 government regulations and 9000000000 EPA standards that it’s had to abide by.
I hate to see the winter heating bill for that place.

There's a photo of a sitting room or sunroom on a top floor gable end that's very nice, not so embellished.
All in all, it seems sort of cheap, even in this economy. That's a landmark property, loaded with history, apparently well maintained and practically irreplaceable.
The Cone mansion not that far away from me, in Greensboro, NC sold for almost that much, and it's half the size, an early twenties Norman Revival.
Maybe the location isn't great or something?

Probably the location, and not much land. In this market I’d be surprised if they got anywhere near the asking price.
100+ year old homes have their problems...and if you don’t fix them properly, they have their pesky preservationist defenders too!
*sigh* Having been there, I totally understand the desire to preserve architectural treasure, but in retrospect...you could restore a lot of human beings with the amount of time and money.

O.J. Seiden was a previous resident of the castle. In this book, he mentions friendly spirits in the old castle.
He and his family experienced many unexplainable events in that house. They always heard footsteps on the 2nd floor— when there was
no one there. Their dogs refused to go up on the second floor for a day or two after the sound of footsteps was heard.
Items also vanished and were not where they had put them. Then the object would end up in very unlikely places, sometimes days or
weeks later.
There is also a spirit in the tower. The Seiden family noticed coming home one night that there was a light on up in the tower. But there is
no electricity or lights up there. Then they thought that someone had gone up there. But— there were absolutely NO footprints in the snow!
They went up there- and no one was there.”
I’d read somewhere recently that the initial purpose of a canopy bed was for cats to sleep on it? And kill rodents at night as they scavenged the bedrooms? And of course to hold the mosquito screenings.

Those must be some well trained cats. Most of the ones I've known want to sleep on top of the person trying to sleep. I always thought canopies were to hold in the heat, and stop drafts..
When I was in high school, our cat would wait on my dresser in the morning. When I first woke up, my eyes would scan the room, and as soon as I looked in the direction of the cat, BAM! he pounced on my chest and nestled down on top of me. Weird cat.
A good mouser will find a mouse behind a plaster wall during a thunderstorm.
