Brazilian doctors: disabled unborn babies will either be cut to pieces or torn apart with aspirator

April 20, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In the wake of a decision by the nation’s Supreme Federal Tribunal determining that babies suffering from the birth defect known as anencephaly aren’t “legally” alive, and therefore can be freely aborted, Brazilian doctors are explaining to the media how such babies will in fact be killed under the new legal regime.

In a recent interview with Brazil’s most popular news magazine, Veja, the Vice-President of the Federal Council on Medicine, Dr. Carlos Vital, explained that doctors will have two choices: either “curettage” or “aspiration.”

Abortions of ancephalic babies will be performed in the second or third trimester.

A curettage abortion uses a loop-shaped knife to cut the child to pieces, and then scrape his body and placenta from the uterine wall. An aspiration abortion uses powerful suction to tear the child apart, and likewise separate him from his mother.

According to doctors, if these methods are inadequate in later term abortions, Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) would be required, involving a clamp that is used to tear apart the baby’s larger body. Dr. Vital told Veja that abortions on anencephalic children could be performed up to the ninth month of pregnancy.

Dr. Vital added that such abortions will require a committee of doctors to determine the proper “criteria for diagnosis” of anencephaly, a condition whose exact definition is not agreed upon by physicians.

Anencephalic babies fail to develop the top parts of their heads, including the skull and upper brain. Most die in the womb or shortly after birth, although some have lived for days, months, and even years with the condition.

Although medical professionals often claim that such children are unaware of their surroundings and unable to suffer, parents of anencephalic babies report that their children show signs of awareness and seem to react in very specific ways to their environment. Some doctors theorize that the brain stem of such infants is able to adapt to the needs of rudimentary awareness, a phenomenon known as “neuroplasticity.”

In the United States, an estimated 95 percent of anencephalic babies are killed inside their mother’s womb.

In a public statement on the Supreme Federal Tribual’s decision, Brazilian pro-life activist Fr. Luis Lodi da Cruz called the verdict “monstrous” and noted that, according to the Tribunal minister who oversaw the case, the abortion of an anencephalic child “is a procedure similar to removing a cadaver.”

“Paradoxically, [Minister] Marco Aurélio admits that the anencephalic dies in a short period of time. Tell me, how can he die if he’s already dead?” asked Lodi da Cruz.

I have been hearing a lot about this “anencephaly” in Brazil and other places near it. Exactly how common is it that they want abortion for it?

How can we point our fingers at them when we’ve been doing the same dance since 1973?

My second son was born with Trisomy 18 and did not live for more than a few minutes after his birth. He had some physical defects but even so we wanted to give him as much life as we could and have an opportunity to see him and say goodbye to him. The doctors highly encouraged us to abort him and move on but it is interesting that afterwards one of the doctors came up to us and said that he thought we were wrong but after seeing what happened that he had changed his mind.

Once you start treating the most vulnerable as disposable trash, its not too long before that kind of treatment is expanded to more and more categories of people. The Germans did that prior to WWII and now it’s starting all over again with the rest of the world.

Thank you for sharing your story. I hope the doctor whose mind changed has stopped recommending abortion to other mothers. Shows how choosing life can have a ripple effect.

It’s very rare. I used to work in a state hospital with babies like this. There’s no way a woman could hold one of these little ones in her arms and let anyone harm it.
No words to describe how precious it is to be able to give them love while they live.

anencephaly is alas “common”: one paper says it’s three cases in 1000 births, but that ignores most of these kids miscarry early...the rate has gone down since it was noticed that taking folic acid (a vitamin) lowers the rate of the disease.

I’ve delivered/cared for about a dozen of these, most born small or died at birth...

When you diagnose a case, often the docs suggest “abortion”, since it is a “non viable” condition: the kid is stillborn or dies at the time of birth.

As a Catholic, usually we let them deliver when mom goes into labor, baptize them, and give them comfort care (keep them warm and feed them) but usually they die since their brain is missing and the hole in the head gets infected and they die. We had one in our NICU when I was a student, and we played with him and fed him (he lived two weeks).

Sometimes you have to induce early labor for the mom’s health: many cases are associated with “polyhydramnos”, a huge amount of amniotic fluid, so a mom with a 2 pound kid will look 12 months pregnant and have trouble breathing.
If the mom is having a lot of trouble breathing, and the child is more than 28 weeks, I would probably induce labor or do a C section for the mom’s sake: The kid will die of his disease, but not from the delivery.

Some docs will do this for the emotional sake of the mom; ethically that is a bit borderline.

However, to do an abortion is stupid. The fetal parts are hard by the time you find out, and cutting the kid apart to abort him is more dangerous than letting the woman go into regular labor. As for curettage, well, you can’t diagnose it that early.

Indeed, it’s not always an “easy” diagnosis: sometimes other problems that are rarer but can result in a child who lives for years are diagnosed as anencephaly. Some cases in the literature that claim anencephalic babies lived for years are these cases.

and ironically, these children do not meet the criteria for brain death; they have the lower brain intact. That is why they aren’t really used as organ donors (although some ‘ethicists” tried to do it awhile back, too many folks objected).

We have been told that Brazil is a “civilized” country!

What kind of barbarians murder their children like this?

Have the Muslims taken over Brazil while no one noticed?

This is hideous.

Thank you for the informative response. It seems nature has a way of taking care of these cases. However, whether life is lived one day or a hundred years, I think it’s always valuable. The weakest among us are still human and deserve to be treated with love and respect. It sounds like that’s exactly what you do. Thanks again.
