The curious are beginning to seek out a bizarre site that sits nestled up against a major roadway in northwest Miami-Dade. The ground is littered with pots full of small tools, machetes, the remains of animals – and, before the police arrived, human bones and a skull.
Richard Couto explains that it is a site for sacrificial rituals performed by practitioners of the Palo Mayombe religion.
"They often use human remains in their ceremonial sites and that is exactly what we found at the bottom of the red pot, a skull with a chain wrapped around it,” he said.
The skull looked weathered and Couto says he thinks it probably came from a local cemetery. "Members of the Palo Mayombe sect often rob graves."
Couto heads the Animal Recovery Mission, best known in South Florida for shutting down illegal horse slaughterhouses. It was the practice of animal sacrifice that drew the activist's attention. He became a self-educated expert on African religions that have strong roots in South Florida.
"When I started going through this one particular pot bringing out all the sacrificed animals, goats, sheep, dogs, cats, on the bottom was that human skull," Couto said.
He finds the site "creepy" but says since he is not a believer it does not bother him.
Miami-Dade Police are working on the case along with the medical examiner.

Palo mayombe can make normal Santeria, and other African based practices look quite mild. These are the real deal dark magic folks not some fat chick in a robe with crystals.
It’s pretty safe to say that if your religious ceremonies involve the use of a human skull and other unspecified human “remains”, you’re chaotic evil.
The key phrase is: “..other African based ...”.
Nothing good came out of Africa except a movie with that title.

The undeniable taint of evil is unquestionably in rituals such as this. However Theoria has a point as the preserved heart of St. Laurence O’Toole, patron saint of Dublin was recently stolen and many other relics which are basically human remains exist in Christianity. It rather makes my skin crawl.
I don’t think this practice is isolated to African religions and Christianity. I’ve seen the mummies of monks in Buddhist temples. In fact, the stupas of famous temples usually claim Buddha relics - remnants of the Buddha’s body. Hindus also have similar creepy remains of ascetics on display. I guess the good of the dead is supposed to rub off on you ( that or give you the winning lotto number).

There is a difference with palo, some of the remains are used to create souls enslaved to the practitioner, so much for resting in peace.
That’s what I meant as a taint of evil. I’ve heard of human sacrifice as well. I guess it’s all in how you come about the remains!
Is there an attorney general concerned about this practice? Or is this one of the good, new religions in Florida? Probably no laws were broken.
I am more concerned about the Taliban Imam in the mosque a half mile from my house.
