I whole-heartedly agree. My buddy has a Hungarian AMD-65 that he loves. I have a Romanian that has a few thousand rounds through it. I've fired nothing but Wolf through it and have never had a problem....including over 1k without a cleaning.
I also have a WASR-10 that I'm not entirely fond of. I didn't feel like dropping the $$$ for Norinco.

Absolutely true. I've seen brand new factory (foreign manufactured for the US civilian market) AKM's & SKS's that had very serious problems, and there are a lot of AK kit builds out there as well. With the latter, you've got a mix of used mil-spec parts (of unpredictable vintage) and "compliance" parts (of unpredictable quality), all assembled by someone (of undetermined education/experience) you do not know. And mixing mil-spec and compliance parts (or even compliance parts from multiple manufacturers) can produce cascading tolerances that result in an unreliable and unsafe weapon - ask me how I know.
...or if you are even slightly handy you can buy a chrome lined Saiga pretty cheap and convert it, just be sure you stay compliant with your US made parts count.
Saiga conversions are an excellent way to go, if you can do the work yourself, or find a qualified gunsmith to do it for you. The combination of new Russian factory-assembled & -tested receiver/barrel/bolt carrier/bolt assembly provides a lot of confidence & predictability. And you can pick a caliber based on either the current cost of ammunition, or your current inventory, or both.
The AR is nicer, but you get what you pay for. The Russian stuff is good enough for home defense on a budget and a whole lot of plinking fun on the cheap.

Russian 5.45x39 7n6 surplus can be had for around $139 for a can of 1080 from several sources, or a case of 2160 rounds for under $270 or so. Check Gunbroker.com
