What does it look like when the world turns out all the lights? A glimpse will be offered today when millions of participants all over the globe -- from Egypt's Tahrir Square to Washington D.C.'s National Cathedral -- are expected to turn their lights off for an hour in honor of Earth Hour. Sydney's symbolic Opera House and Harbor Bridge were a couple of the first places to go dark, as Australians took part in the global effort to raise awareness over climate change and show the need for sustainability. The event takes place worldwide on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time, during which time people are encouraged to turn off their lights for 60 minutes. ~snip
The organization holds the event annually on the last weekend in March because it's about "the time of the spring and fall equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively. This allows for near coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres, thereby ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global 'lights out' event," says the WWF Web site. In the United States, five states are participating Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Montana and New Hampshire -- and almost 60 cities and towns not to mention many more landmarks, buildings, colleges, businesses, and organizations. The rest of the world is acting in a similar fashion. New Zealand got a two-hour head start of Australia, as lights were turned off at Sky Tower in Auckland and parliament buildings in Wellington. Several buildings along Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong participated, including the International Finance Centre, ... ~snip
Libya, Algeria, Bhutan and French Guinea. "Earth Hour 2012 is a celebration of people power," WWF official Dermot O'Gorman told reporters, including AP, hours before the event in Sydney. "(It's) the world's largest mass event in support of the planet."

Also participate with fellow Christians in what promises to be an evening filled with fun, music, art, and fellowship.
That is what I think of Earth Hour!

Here is my house at Earth Hour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHwa-Iq1Bx4
That’s silly, Drango. Just do what you would do if you hadn’t read about this. I’ll be cozied up in my toasty waterbed watching the 43” plasma play movies off my PC.
The rest of the lights and devices will be out (except for the stuff the wife and kids leave on) and my heat will be turned down.
Peace be with you...
Opened my sunroof and turned on the air conditioner.
Oh, I can’t wait. Every light is going on.
Stupid liberals!!!

"Turn ON the lights ... their party's o-ver!"
I have a 50" and a 47" plasma. And if I could do it, I'd turn off the energy star for an hour.
Damn! Missed it!
Turn on all your lights for Human Achievement Day!
The lights off shore are the vast Korean fishing fleet. Light attracts fish.
...and keep Freeping too.
Yes! Human Achievement Day has been promoted all over Canada by Sun News! This conservative news channel is hard-hitting and makes Fox look timid and semi-flaky.
All lights on from 8:30 to 9:30 for HAH...Human Achievement Hour.
The lights off shore are the vast Korean fishing fleet. Light attracts fish.....
As Johnny Carson used to say,
“I did not know that”
and turning on all my lights for edison hour
Amazing Christmas-time light show there! WOW
I didn't know about it. Thank you.
Will have all the lights on in the house, garage and car. Will have all the window shades open, with lights pointed outward for the benefit of any satellite photos. Bonfire in the back yard for the same reason. Air conditioner running at full speed, with windows open, oven and all stove burners on high. Washer, dryer, dishwasher. I wonder how fast our electric meter can spin.
North Korea... Next question jackass!?
I’m turning on every light, all TVs and radios, plugging in floor heater, putting on my security light, and running my blow dryer (kitty needs her bath).
I’m still waiting for Gaia Toilet Paper Day with Sheryl Crow as the parade marshall! Idiots!
Thanks for the reminder. I don’t have time to hang Christmas lights, but I can stretch some out on the lawn.
Bonus, the store is just east of the Delaware river, take that, stupid fishes.
Earth Day was (originally) a COMMUNIST celebration designed to weaken the U.S. from within. That is why the day was set, not by coincidence, on the birthday of Karl Marx.
North Korea
In solidarity with NK, Libya, Liberia, Zimbabwe and Somalia...I celebrate Human Achievement Hour!
I’m watching SUN News TV on satellite here in Canada right now. They’re calling this thing tonight, Human Achievement Hour. Turn on your favorite thing that illustrates how creative we are. TV, electric lights, telephones, whatever.
One of the hosts says he’s going to jam open the refrigerator door and turn on a space heater, then let them battle it out.
really don’t feel like paying for the electricity, so I’m going to buy six sleeves of Styrofoam cups, unwrap them, and run them over in the grocery store parking lot.
Bonus, the store is just east of the Delaware river, take that, stupid fishes.
I absolutely LOVE Free Republic
Oh thank God you posted this!
I will be proud to turn on all our lights! Thanks for the reminder!
I bet our snippy neighbors with the PITA Papillons will be all dark, too. They seemed to be last year.
Lights a-blazin’!
Me too, me too.
We are not alone when we have FR, for so many reasons.
I have several, double 300-watt shop lights on stands. I’ll bring them out on the driveway and point them upward.
Why doesn’t it start at the top of the hour?
“Just do what you would do if you hadnt read about this.”
That just looks like you are just ignorant of the movement’s plans.
Just for good measure, should we keep our toilets on auto-flush for the Hour, too? :D
Very dark except for moonlight http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2866492/posts#comment

What time will I be turning on the Fender amp, playing my guitar through a digitech RP200 effects box running through my Peavey Mixer (with phantom power) to go with the Senheiser mic? The setup uses a lot of power! The article didn’t say. Oh, due to the power drain caused by all the equip, I also use a pre amp for additional phantom power. When I get cooking the neighborhood lights flicker..
Good plan!
LOL We would have to hide our toilet paper.
I’ll join you!!!
>>That is why the day was set, not by coincidence, on the birthday of Karl Marx.
April 22 is Lenin’s birthday.
I’ll fire up my pinball machines.
Each flip of the flipper is like turning on a vacuum cleaner in current consumption! LOL
Actually it’s not Marx’s birthday. Unfortunately his is right before my mother’s (that oughta thrill her) in May. And apparently, some local originators started with the March equinox (they love pagan dates), then somehow we ended up with a month later.
