Former Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman is to replace Karen Gillan in Doctor Who as the Time Lord's new companion, it was revealed last night. The BBC will announce today that the 25-year old has been hired to take over the role, after Miss Gillan's character Amy Pond leaves the show in the next series. Miss Coleman, from Blackpool, who also featured in BBC school drama Waterloo Road, carries on the tradition of glamorous sidekicks, having been twice nominated for 'Sexiest Female' at the British Soap Awards.

Upon doing further research, today I find that Elizabeth Sladen died last year. She was Dr. who companion from my time.

The episode "School Reunion" was one of my favorite new Doctor episodes because of the way that she played the ex-wife angle. And who can forget Mickey Smith's "Oh my god. I'm the tin dog!" That line alone justified that otherwise annoying character's existence.
As for the new companion, I just hope she doesn't come with a boyfriend. Because Mickey Smith, Rory, Adric and the rest of the emasculated twits they pair them up with make me want to puke. Heck the only guy they put on the Tardis who actually was useful in a fight was Captain Jack, and he was a flamer.

She had her own spin-off series (The Sarah Jane Adventures), more for children than Doctor Who, and still looked fabulous for being 60+.

Hmm, I rather liked Karen Gillan, although her chronic screaming of “Doctor!” did grate. I thought Rory was kind of annoying. Not familiar with this new girl.

Heck the only guy they put on the Tardis who actually was useful in a fight was Captain Jack, and he was a flamer. I find Doctor Who interesting as a study of women. In the New Doctor series, the sidekick might already have a boyfriend (Rose with Mickey, Amy with Rory), but as soon as she sees the alpha-male Doctor it wipes the beta-male boyfriend out of her psyche. She then spends a season or two pining after the Doctor who has no romantic interest in her, and being very dissatisfied with the boyfriend, or forgetting him entirely.
I see this happening in real life as well, women ignoring the guys who might really want them, to spend time chasing after "exciting" guys. Meanwhile, the "exciting" guy finally dumps the girl and moves on to a younger/hotter/tighter model when the older girlfriend pushes him on commitment.
The dynamics may be more interesting this season, what with the Doctor being officially married to River Song, while chasing around Time and Space with Ms Hottie.

Rory was kind of annoying at first, but after he became a Centurian, he grew quite a bit more assertive in the role.

If they have to have a boy friend for Ms Hottie I would love it to be an actual Alpha. Someone who would actually be a challenge for the smug self assurance of the Doctor. Bring up the whole morality of altitude issue where the Doctor who won't use a gun because killing is immoral, has repeatedly destroyed whole worlds. The Doctor has no problem sending others with guns to do the killing (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart), but refuses to get his hands dirty.
If the producers want to deal with tough morality issues that would be the one. Is the pacifist who refuses to fight but sends others out to kill for them actually moral? Who is more moral, the the blood covered guy who kills with a knife, who kills only those he intends, or the guy who wastes entire worlds from a sterile control room, and never sees any of the people he destroys?

The Doctor has no problem sending others with guns to do the killing (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart), but refuses to get his hands dirty. As an example of this, the Fires of Pompeii episode has him deciding that incinerating thousands of men, women, and children was acceptable collateral damage in order to get the Pyroviles. And blowing up Vesuvius is necessary because the Doctor is too pure to use weapons. He does this a lot: guns are very bad, so lets blow them up instead. He thinks like a Leftist (or at least his script-writers do).

Being a time traveler the perfect foil for him would be one of the Old Contemptables. A regular Tommy Atkins of Queen Victoria's army complete with SMLE or Martini-Henry, bayonet and the guts to use it. A Brit from before the age of political correctness who would have no problem calling out the doctor on his hypocrisy. Someone who wouldn't hesitate to apply Rule 303 to Davros, the Master or any other threat to his friends, family or native land.

They've sorta done that, and he married her.
The Doctor [on the destruction and losses of Demons Run]: You think I wanted this? I didn’t do this! This ... this wasn’t me! River Song: This was exactly you. All this, all of it. You make them so afraid. When you began, all those years ago, sailing off to see the universe, did you ever think you’d become this? The man who can turn an army around at the mention of his name? Doctor – the word for healer, and wise man, throughout the universe. We get that word from you, you know. But if you carry on the way you are, what might that word come to mean? To the people of the Gamma Forests, the word "doctor" means "mighty warrior". How far you’ve come. And now they’ve taken a child. The child of your best friends. And they’re going to turn her into a weapon, just to bring you down. And all this, my love … in fear of you.
