Report: Rangers' forward Avery retiring?

Is Sean Avery done with hockey?

Avery said Monday night during an After Show segment of Bravo TV's Watch What Happens Live that he was leaving the game. When asked about his hockey future, Avery said, "I am officially retired. I threw my skates in the Hudson."

If true, the announcement would close out a tumultuous final season for Avery spent with the New York Rangers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Connecticut Whale. After being waived by the Rangers earlier this season, Avery was assigned to the Whale before re-joining New York on Nov. 5. In 15 games with the Rangers this season, Avery scored three goals and registered 21 penalty minutes. As a member of the Whale he scored two goals and had an assist to go with 39 PIMs in seven games, though he was also a healthy scratch for several games with the team.

Avery last played for the Whale on Jan. 27 and was not on the team's clear-day roster, making him ineligible for the AHL postseason. He has been told he no longer needs to report to the team.

In 580 games across parts of 10 seasons with New York, Dallas, Los Angeles and Detroit, Avery has 90 goals and 157 assists to go with 1,533 PIMs. His most productive season came in 2005-06 with Los Angeles, when he had 15 goals and 24 assists in 75 games.

There’s tough guys, and then there are simply assholes. Avery is the latter.

I think he’s also going to come out of the closet soon.

He set the Stars franchise back at least three seasons.

Avery fell into the the category of “Agitator” and he was good at it.

In sports, you can hate a player on the opposing team, but when he comes to your team, you love him.

That didn’t apply to Avery. Everyone hated him.

Iran is developing a nuclear weapon. Obama is destroying the country. And oh yeah, what’s going on in the sports world?

Matt Cooke is another. I almost put Corey Perry in that category as well but he can light the lamp.

Brooks Orpik too IMO.

"Matt Cooke is another."

I think Mario had a talk with him in the off-season. Cooke has really straightened up this year. And he does a decent job of lighting the lamp also. He's got 12 goals and he's a great penalty killer.

Brooks Orpik is a great hitter. The only shot that has ever been considered dirty (IMO) was the one on Eric Cole a few years back. That one was uncalled for. If all he was was a goon, I doubt he would have been on the USA Olympic team in 2010.

It’s funny, a guy like Matthew Barnaby was a loudmouth pest, but he was one of those guys that everyone on his team loved (and everyone else hated) because he never backed down from anything or anybody and he was loyal to whatever team he was on. Avery’s just as big a pest but like you said, everybody hates him, even his own teams. He’s just a jerk.

As a Carolina Hurricane's season ticket holder - and at the time a neighbor of Peter Lavoilette (shameless name dropper, yes, I know...) - that Cole hit does sort of define Orpik to me, along with his very nonchalante reaction to it.

One other thing, he’s an alternate captain. The consumate dirty player who goes over the line with cheap shots would never be voted to be an alternate. Being a hitter like he is, sometimes he makes dumb mistakes. That was one IMO. I can respect someone like him a lot more than people who go around hitting people with cheap shots (aka Ovechkin and Messier) who have other people do their fighting for them after they deliver said cheap shots.

I don’t recall Matt trashing ex girlfriends as Avery did.

Most real tough guys are gentlemen off the ice.

It will give him more time to concentrate on his gay modeling and fashion career.

Agreed. They announced today that Sid is returning against the Rangers.

"Agreed. They announced today that Sid is returning against the Rangers."

That's great. Without Sid, they are one of the four or five best teams in hockey. With him, I believe they are the best team in the NHL. I really felt like his career might be over earlier this year. I just hope nothing happens to his noggin....

“Iran is developing a nuclear weapon. Obama is destroying the country. And oh yeah, what’s going on in the sports world?”

NFL free-agency period starts in an hour and a half. NCAA basketball tournament starts tonight. MLB is in the middle of spring training. The OKC Thunder are leading the NBA West...

Or was that question rhetorical?
