Rare Star Trek Photos Show Green Orion Slavegirls Like You’ve Never Seen Them
The original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage," included a lot more of the scenes where Vina is turned into a green Orion slavegirl who dances for Captain Pike — but they were cut because they were too saucy for prime time television. Now, some rare Trek behind-the-scenes pictures include a brand new look at the unshown parts of Vina's dance sequence.
Including a part where the poor slavegirl gets whipped. Turns out being an Orion slavegirl isn't all dancing and quoting poetry.
Tom Redlaw, aka Bird of the Galaxy, has collected tons and tons of behind-the-scenes Star Trek images and rare frames from the show. These were sold as 35 mm film cells at conventions and via mail order through Lincoln Enterprises, a company run by Gene Roddenberry and his wife, Majel Barrett. And now, Redlaw has been scanning and restoring these rare images and posting them on his Flickr page.
Talking to What Culture, Redlaw explains:
In the early 1970s the first Star Trek conventions happened in New York. Those, plus the original Lincoln Enterprises catalogs (you received them when you wrote to Gene Rodenberry or NBC executives) were what started me buying these. Recall, there were no VCRs, DVDs, internet. So being able to project these little slides was as close to on demand Trek images as you could get in those days. And, it was a glorious exercise trying to find your favorites. By 1975 I think I had around 2000 of these things, I guess that was the collection and really what I stopped at for 30 years. Then, one day I bought a slide and negative scanner to restore some of my own 35mm photography and just to test it out I put a scratched and red faded film clip of the Doomsday Machine into it, and I was astounded at the result. A little bit of photoshop work later and I was hooked.

An unshown part of the Orion slave dance illusion from The Cage pilot. This pose and sequence was neither shown in the pilot reel nor the subsequent portions shown in The Menagerie. They involved a series of sensual, almost animal like crouching moves emphasizing the wilder side of the character. Note the long nails! Some have drawn parallels between the dance sequence and the movements of a cat (indeed in the original Rodenberry scrip Vina snarls at the servants and has to be controlled by a whip). Here we have Susan Oliver in green, this is how it all started! Filmed in December 1964.
In the Orion slave dance illusion, the script calls for an introduction that shows servants attending Pike, Vina as the slave dancer coming out and acting cat like and snarling at them to chase them away, Pike's personal servant brandishing a whip to settle her down and focus on her dance, and ultimately her doing the dance we see in the pilot. This shot shows the unshown servant whip in hand, attempting to keep Vina in check. Other unused and unshown clips from this sequence are the servants attending Pike before Vina comes out:

Sean Kenney has makeup applied to his face in order to portray the disfigured and paralyzed Captain Pike for the "wrap" story The Menagerie used in the first season of Star Trek TOS. Could this be the hand of Fred Phillips applying the makeup?

Tombstone 6.25.68 - The Anderson company filmed a number of special effects and props through the life of Star Trek. This shot, taken a month after completion of the live action shooting, was for the first filmed episode of the third season of TOS, Spectre of the Gun, and shows the set up of the filming sequence. No clapper is necessary as this is silent, so the ID is just to help identify the film leader as belonging to this job but not to synchronize sound.
A Roll In the Hay - The Mugato threatens Kirk with....something bad. From the TOS episode A Private Little War. Most of this show was am anti-Vietnam War escalation story, but then, out of nowhere, comes this horny big primate like creature. Ah well, this show created one of the best bloopers out there, the famous crotch arrow in cave sequence....Janos Prohaska played the Mugato. Janos also played the creature in the Cage adjacent to Pike's in the pilot and the horta from Devil in the Dark
Gary's Excellent Adventure at the Galaxy Edge - The optical composite showing Gary Mitchell's moment of energy transfer from the barrier at the edge of the galaxy from the Star Trek TOS second pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before. Visible here are three layers of optical including the sparkling, the white outline, and the color filtered Gary Lockwood.
I was a young adolescent with hormones on overdrive when I first saw that episode. My eyes must have been as big as saucers. After all these years she is still looking hot. If they ever did locate a planet with these gals, I would be begging the Government to give NASA more money. Hint to NASA – search harder.
The only problem is if we did find the Orion Girls, my wife wouldn’t let me keep one.
An Unused Pilot Transporter Effect - Many visual effects were evaluated before deciding on the final shimmer asssoicated with the transporter beaming process. This was the most colorful, showing what ultimately was a discarded effect using multiple, different color fills for each person within a red outline being "beamed" out or in via a shimmering column.
Test Shot of Fully Lit Guardian of Forever on Soundstage - This shot shows the soundstage with the Guardian of Forever from the TOS episode City On the Edge of Forever. Visible are all of the lights in the guardian, the forced perspective showing the small, close though meant to look far away columned structure in the back, the roof of the soundstage on the upper left, and considerrable detail on the sruface of the guardian itself including the small red splatter dots on the left and right side which I always thought were image defects but clearly are features on the prop
Last Seconds of the USS Constellation - With other recent uploads of the Constellation and Doomsday Machine I was reminded of this one more. An external rear view of the Constellation during the climax of the TOS episde The Doomsday Machine, this shot shows the rear view of the damaged model and the optical insert for the Doomsday Machine. .
Talos IV, Unused Optical Composite for Enterprise Briefing - One of several optically composited images produced (I have seen five variants) to illustrate the surface of Talos IV on the Enterprise briefing room computer screen after Pike has been taken by the Talosians. From The Cage. This shot has the same land features as the one ultimately used in the show, but superimposes the Pleiades star system in the sky and a third component that looks to be clouds. This shot of the Pleiades was used in The Cage and was actually on the viewscreen on the bridge before the diagram appeared of the Talos planetary sytem on Spock's viewscreen. (the stars, not the land features)
Going.....Going.....Gorn - The Gorn costume before the tunic was put on, showing the breathing holes that were essential to keep the actor inside ventillated. The suit was rubber and like wearing a total head Halloween mask.
Knobs - Sherry Jackson as the android Andrea in the famous Bill Theiss costume, and the late Ted Cassidy as Ruk, from the TOS episode What Are Little Girls Made Of? A partial answer to that somewhat rhetorical question is pretty visible in Sherry's outfit in this beautifully posed shot. I guess the question answered in the picture may be more correctly stated as - what are big girls made of?

Empath Blooper 7.29.68 - On Minara II the Vians tell Kirk and Spock that Star Trek's high quality third season will enable the show to be renewed for a fourth season. Shatner and Nimoy find it difficult to film the scene seriously, and are still laughing on the sixth take. Clapper from the TOS episode The Empath. This shot is scanned from a printed image sold by Lincoln Enterprises in the 1970s and not from an original film clip, hence it is fuzzier than other images...though I would love to locate an original 35mm of this one!
I’m actually watching the 2009 Star Trek movie on FX right now, and they just showed the scene with Kirk in bed with Uhura’s green-skinned Orion girl roommate :)
Starbase 11 Menagerie Version - A matte painting of Starbase 11 as shown in the beginning of the two part wrap around TOS episode The Menagerie. Another Albert Whitlock painting. This Starbase was mentioned in two episodes, The Menagerie and Court Marial, though the details shown and the sky are quite different in both treatments. They were later harmonized to some extent in the CGI remasters.
