Madame Steinem Would Approve A town in France abolishes the title "mademoiselle" for young, unmarried women, the rationale from feminists being: It's none of your business.
French actress Catherine Deneuve, 68 and formerly married, prefers the title "mademoiselle."
By Kim Willsher January 15, 2012 Reporting from Paris What's in a title? Plenty, according to French feminists who have persuaded a town to drop the honorific "mademoiselle" on official forms.
From now on, the women of Cesson-Sevigne, population 16,000, will be addressed as "madame" regardless of age or marital status.
"Mademoiselle," the Gallic form of "miss," is normally used for young, unmarried women, thus, feminists say, openly declaring them either available or unwanted in a way that men, always referred to as "monsieur," are not. A French form of "ms." would solve the problem, but there you go.
Exactly when a woman reaches the age when she becomes a "madame," married or otherwise, is not only a matter of debate but a social minefield; women of a certain age will often ask themselves whether the waiter who calls them "mademoiselle" is being gallant or sarcastic.
French movie stars Catherine Deneuve, 68, once married, and Jeanne Moreau, 84 this month and three times married, prefer to be addressed as "mademoiselle" and, as a quirky exception to the rule, are allowed, as actresses, to claim that right.

I fear the world in general has far too much time on their hands if this is an issue.
isn’t that what the call the gal who runs the whorehouse?
Or is it the old, bitter, and ugly Mmes that don't like the special treatment for the cute, young and available ones?

That was foolish. There are lots of times when people need to address minors, to distinguish them from adults. Instead of eliminating a word, they need two others, unrelated to marital status, which is reasonable, the equivalent of “boy” and “girl”, yet as a polite form of address.
The whole Mlle/Mmes confusion is the Marxist “hierarchy of gender” ideas of egalitarianism-—where family and marriage has to be obsolete, as all biological connections—where there is no meaning in relationships and no special respect given to moral acts—there is no Right and Wrong.
All traditions have to be eliminated-—to destroy connections between family—past and future and God-—so society can be completely redesigned without God.
It is the Marxists reorganization of human nature-—they need to destroy natural urges-—promote unnatural ones and dysfunction and force it by law—BUT FIRST-—they destroy all meaning of language-—so that there can be no truth—no intelligent debate which includes moral rectitude and Virtue-—necessary in all civil society.
Confuse the kids—destroy rationality.. stick words like homosexual with “marriage” for a decade so it becomes possible. and normalized and not “shocking” which it was because of the silly/stupid/immorality of such a thing as sodomy.......human beings are nothing but animals (but even animals don’t do sodomy or sodomize their young) -there is no God-—no Moral Absolutes-—no difference between men and women-—interchangeable-—same with Man/boy-—no differentiation.
It is all to remove all sexual morality and destroy all biological connections. It prevents Katniss revolutions for there is no Primrose.....so they have complete control and NO ONE ROCKS THE BOAT.
This is the prelude to the removal of age of consent. Blur the line so there is no difference between girls and women. It is the UN and the APA that are actively trying to make boys and girls ok for the elites to rape and use at will— like Sandusky and John Maynard Keynes, Harvey Milk. The whole “intergenerational sex” as is the homosexual movement is a Marxist movement to remove God and all sexual morality. To kill God and particularly Christian Ethics that formed our country. They want no Ethics—no Right and Wrong. They do want the boys and they want it legal so they don’t have to hide. They like their orgies-—exactly like the end of the Roman Empire-—when children were staging sex shows with the adults in their orgies. Same with the Weimar Republic.
Or that's what they think, anyway.
You did a good job of sumarizing the leftist ideology.
Leftists can be subverted as well. It just takes time.

I will follow Catherine Deneuve, who has to be one of the top most beautiful women in the world, anywhere and call her anything she desires. However, Mademoiselle” has a nice, respectful ring to it.
I would have loved to call her “Catherine”, to her face, when we were younger. “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” was a cute film and she looked like $10 million bucks.
Ms in place of Miss - Hard to find this info:
...In the 1960s, however, some women began to chafe against the use of the titles, because they believed that the terms suggested a certain sense of ownership. A Miss could be said to be the property and responsibility of her parents, as she was historically, and a Mrs. was the property of her husband, by being marked with his name and a change in honorific. Women wanted to find a term which could be used universally for all women without implying marital status, just as Mr. is used for men.
In 1961, Sheila Michaels thought that Ms. might be an appropriate middle-ground. Her discovery was probably brought about by a typo, and it took another 10 years for the term to become popular. By the 1970s, many women, along with a major feminist magazine, had adopted “Ms.” as an appropriate universal title. (snip)
Heh, heh, I’d like to see 68-year-old Catherine Deneuve make “Belle du Jour Parte Deux” now.
Isn’t there a French equivalent of “Ms.”?
I didn’t like it at first in the 1970’s but Ms. is after all feminine and neutral as to the woman’s age & status.
FWIW, I first saw La Deneuve au naturel in Playboy in 1965 so no talk of ageism, please. And Frenchwomen age better than women anywhere else on Earth, so I could be completely wrong about my earlier assumption.
Would those terms not be "master" and "mistress" for younger people?
In America we solved that issue. We now use the terms “bitch” and “ho.”
Too English. Also used in other ways that are far less appropriate.
A problem is that such words for youth are always appropriated by adults for their own purposes, often rude. This is why it would be better to have new words, that once appropriated, could be discarded, and other new words adopted.
There are those who would regard those as too servile, suggesting the slaves from Gone with the Wind to some people, and the droids from Star Wars to others.
