Don’t dare try going to the Walmart in Pinellas Park. What a zoo. Last time I was in K Mart I walked out leaving my buggy in the one checkout that was open.
They were purchased for the real estate investment, which at the time was a bargain. Unfortunately, they sat on them and didn't sell the real estate as planned and now the values have plummeted.
Wallymart
You are exactly correct.
I was employed by them for 20+yrs. until the mid 80s.
I saw the writing on the wall as to their customer service, store layout, management policies. Knew they were headed for trouble and bailed out.
When my father was growing up a 100 years ago, they had no indoor plumbing, but his family did have a “two-seater” in the back yard.
Since they didn’t have any Charmin, the Sears catalogue was what they used. No one was happy when they got to the glossy pages.
Good thing we have indoor plumbing now since Sears won’t be providing their catalogues anymore
I once worked for them.
Did it really stand for 8 Jewish Korean War Vets? I grew up going to the one in Forest Park, IL. Where did you work? And when did they go out of business? Must have been early 70s?
No. There's an explanation out there, somewhere on the web.
I grew up going to the one in Forest Park, IL. Where did you work?
In a store just outside of NYC. Woodmere.
And when did they go out of business? Must have been early 70s?
Something like that. They were bought out by a holding company that owned similar retail chains.
Korvette's had a good niche but nothing lasts and the retail business sees many successful chains have their day and then go bankrupt.
Good thing they’re not closing the Roebuck stores.
In recent years, however, it is more difficult to find exactly the same thing in the store that you originally bought. My husband has had to settle for a similar tool or pitch in a couple of bucks for a newer version of a socket wrench.
Other than that, Sears is a dead issue. Can't find a person to help you, even though there are quite a few employees visiting with each other within view. More and more, Sears is an ethnic store, at least in our area of the world.
Every K-Mart within driving distance of us in the ArkLaMiss closed years ago. I haven't seen one in ages.
I used work for what was the 4th largest discount chain in the 1990s. The store manager at my store used to be buy new shopping carts and I asked the manager why we need new carts. He said all the stores are getting new carts. At the time, we were in chapter 11.
EYEP...years ago I convinced a friend of mine that he could take back his scroll saw that he was using for years and get a larger one (that he wanted) just by cleaning up the one he had....he did pay something like $20 to upgrade but had a slew of new tinker items on the new saw.
We have one KMart left in my local area, we went there a few weeks before Christmas. The store was filthy and disorganized, prices were high, and employees were rude and indifferent. I used to like KMart, but have no reason to go to that one again.
I agree, the stores parking lots around Melbourne are always empty and they do not have merchandise that I want the past few years.
Never went to either one this year...even for Christmas shopping!
We will see if there is another wave of closings coming.
