Newt Gingrich has opened a major lead nationally over Mitt Romney, who is still stuck in roughly the same place he has been throughout the year, according to new NBC/WSJ poll numbers.

At the same time, Gingrich has real red flags for a general election, the survey found.

In the GOP matchups, Gingrich is at 40 percent to Romney's 23 percent. Everyone else is in single digits - Ron Paul gets 9 percent, Michele Bachmann 8 percent, Rick Perry 6 percent, Jon Huntsman 5 percent and Rick Santorum 3 percent.

Ugh...how did this happen that we have such momentum and passion in 2010 only to whip the life out of it with such a wet noodle, truly awful bunch from which to choose?

your response reminds me of a joke :

A man is drowning in the sea.’’Help me, Lord,’’ he cries.

Just then, a fishing trawler comes by. ‘’Climb on board’’ yells the skipper.

‘’No, no, no,’’ says the drowning man. ‘’The Lord will save me.’’

‘’OK,we will be on our way, then,’’ replies the captain.

Two minutes later a rescue helicopter landed along-side the poor chap, and the pilot threw a rope into the fierce waves. ‘’I do not need any help,’’ cries the breathless man, ‘’The Lord will come and rescue me.’’

Moments later the guy drowns, and finds himself in heaven. On meeting God, the man weeps: ‘’Lord, I was waiting for you to rescue me from my watery tomb. Why did you not save me?’’

God replies:’’ You daft sod. I sent you a boat and a bloody helicopter!’’

When God sends you salvation, don't ask for references. Gingrich is not perfect, and neither was Moses. God often uses imperfect people to carry out his will.

Sorry, not buying it. It works for Tim Tebow, but not for Newt. And the reason is this - one’s actions match his words and the other does not.

Romney’s ‘I’ll bet you 10k” moment led the highlite reel of the debate...and he looked like the creepiest used car salesman you could ever imagine. It might be his ‘macaca moment’.

Shemp on FNC channel just said that someone that he is very close to is very close to Davy Axelgrease and that Axelgrease has told him that the fix is already in and Barry had 2012 in the bag. Hrumph! Hrumph!

This is interesting considering the pounding Newt has taken in the last two weeks. Saturday nights debate by ABC was a “get Newt” debate as an example. Newt seems to be weathering the storm.

To all you NEWT lovers!

Do you really believe that he is the best candidate or do you believe that he is the best among the leaders?

Newt has major problems with both his actions and his philosophy. Now if you really want to overlook that and elect him anyway, that’s okay...

But. You should really look at the other candidates and determine if they are closer to your beliefs. Yes, if between Romney and Newt, I select Newt... but.

If you really want Conservative change, Newt is not the one.

Great. Just keep sulking and I'm sure that Obama will send you a thank you note.

Not to be repetitive, but Rick Perry crashed and burned, Cain's gone, Ron Paul's nuts, Palin left, and Huntsman/Romney et al are closet liberals. That leaves us with a tough, experienced Newt Gingrich -lumps and all, far and away better Than Obie and his Supreme Court picks.

That's the way it is, unless you can get somebody else better.
