Santa Clara, 49ers announce deal to pay for stadium

At long last, the 49ers' turbulent drive for a new home in Silicon Valley is reaching the end zone.

The NFL team and Santa Clara announced Friday that they have captured all the money needed to build a proposed $1 billion football stadium next to the Great America theme park -- the largest and final obstacle needed before construction can start.

"It's like first-and-goal from the 9-yard line," said Ron Garratt, a consultant helping lead the project for the city. "We think we're going to score from here."

The funding deal was spelled out in a development contract that caps two-and-a-half years of closed-door negotiations between city and team leaders and essentially completes a planning process that began when the team announced interest in abandoning San Francisco five years ago.

Goldman Sachs, U.S. Bank and Bank of America have agreed to loan the city and team a combined $850 million to pay for the lion's share of the construction, which could start as soon as next year. But critics are alarmed by a major shift in the funding plan that emerged Friday: The city will take on more than twice as much debt as was promised to voters, even though the 49ers vow they won't leave the city holding the bag.

My brother and sis-in-law live there (circa San Tomas and El Camino). To say they are less than thrilled would be an understatement.

Where exactly is it going in, by Great America?

Since it’s the home of the x86 technology (still in your Intel i7 ‘puter, you betcha!), may be we oughta change their name to Silicon Valley 86ers!

86 means to throw out and/or ban.

I’d go with 77ers...

That’s why I’d go with 86. What is 77?

Yes, but it would be right near Maria Elana’s, you could get excellent Mexican food a short walk from the park.

77 is like 69, but you get 8 more.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. They still have a quarterback who isn’t in the top 50 in the NFL.

I’m a 49ers fan from the South Bay. I have never heard another 49ers fan say they want them to move down here. It’s stupid. It’s a terrible place to move them. But they will do it anyway.

I know. My office used to be over there in the same area. What a pain in the ass it was. Not too bad on Sunday though.

The South Bay is a better spot for an NFL team than either SF or Oakland. There are more people here, and more families. Median income is significantly higher in the South Bay than in either SF or Oakland. Infrastructure around the Great America area is much better suited to a large public venue than anywhere in SF, and the weather is far superior. More 49ers season ticket holders live in the South Bay than in SF.

No, it's actually a great place to move them. That's why the Raiders might end up sharing the stadium with the 49ers. The problem is that the city of Santa Clara is going to soak its taxpayers to get it done.

“traffic will be a nightmare””

The games are on Sunday and it is 10 days a year.
Fans start streaming in 3-4 hours before kick off.
It is right off 101, near 237 and 85 and 280
Traffic nightmare? NOT!
it would have been nice to be next to ATT Park, but SF did not even get close to getting it done
plus the weather is better
As a conservative and a Taxpayer, I do not like this at all, but the duly elected city government voted and approved it. So, if you don’t like it, work within the law to vote them out, or file a lawsuit, or move, or whatever you would like to legally do within the confines of the Constitution (Fed and State) and the city charter of Santa Clara.
