Eating fish reduces risk of Alzheimer's disease
Radiological Society of North America ^ | November 30, 2011

CHICAGO – People who eat baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis may be improving their brain health and reducing their risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease, according to a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

"This is the first study to establish a direct relationship between fish consumption, brain structure and Alzheimer's risk," said Cyrus Raji, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "The results showed that people who consumed baked or broiled fish at least one time per week had better preservation of gray matter volume on MRI in brain areas at risk for Alzheimer's disease."

Alzheimer's disease is an incurable, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and cognitive skills. According to the National Institute on Aging, as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer's disease. In MCI, memory loss is present but to a lesser extent than in Alzheimer's disease. People with MCI often go on to develop Alzheimer's disease.

Eating fried fish, on the other hand, was not shown to increase brain volume or protect against cognitive decline.

Wonder if Gorton’s Crunchy Fish Sticks count.

They’re kosher and for breakfast at my house, 3-4 days a week.

I’m not sure those are really fish as opposed to a chemically engineered product that somewhat resembles fish..

No mention of grilled, but I assume since it is fat free it would have similar results to broiled. At least I hope so, since that is how we prepare fish most of the time.

No, 100% fish. Cod, I think. Been around since US civil war.

But it is essential that the fish is cooked in a manner that preserves the vital Omega-3 fatty acids which help protect the brain, researchers said.

Grilling or baking the meat provides the maximum levels of Omega-3, which increase blood flow to the brain, reduce inflammation and limit the build-up of harmful plaques which precedes Alzheimer’s.

In contrast fried fish has very low amounts of Omega-3 and consequently offers no protection whatsoever against dementia and age-related memory loss, known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

This may be more palliative than anything. Not too long ago it was discovered that something that dentists had long noted, that Alzheimer’s patients very often had bad teeth, may be a major cause of Alzheimer’s itself.

The most commonly known spirochete bacteria causes syphilis, but there are at least five bacteria of this kind that are common in the human mouth. Typically, bacteria have a hard time getting to the brain, because of the blood-brain barrier.

But if people have chronic bleeding gums and periodontal disease, there is a direct route from the capillaries of the mouth to the brain. It is unlikely that these bacteria will directly cause a serious infection there, but when they die, there is no effective way for them to be removed from the brain.

And years of dead bacteria build-up may be the plaque seen in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution. Brushing teeth with inexpensive, powdered baking soda, will kill spirochete bacteria with about 5 seconds of exposure, especially when used in combination with a water pick, that disrupts bacterial colonies behind the gum line.

Unfortunately, baking soda toothpaste is not concentrated enough to do the job, and using regular toothpaste is still important for its fluoride and anti-plaque ingredients. So it is best to alternate.
