In Chile you have fine BASIC socialized health care and you have Excellent private care. However if you are a young lady with a high risk pregnancy you are out of luck unless you are wealthy. Likely you will miscarry.

Here in the US you will get excellent care and likely your baby will be born alive. However it will likely be born with problems which make it's survival rate lower then normal.

So the books will show Chile spends less and it also has a lower death rate. But the actual story is quite different.

Glucosamin, 1500 mg daily will prevent most hip and knee surgery if taken soon enough.

More accurate reporting is probably a part of it, but minority “lifestyles” are a major factor, as is the abundance of food and the number of jobs that don’t require much or any physical activity.

They are too poor to run to the doctor all of the time.
The average American over 60 is on Coumadin wether they need it of not. Coumadin is a dangerous blood thinner.
Does that tell you something?
When a drug commercial comes on TV, watch to the end, and ask yourself, why should I risk death by taking that product? Remember, medical doctors are trained by Big Pharma, and big Pharma owns us.

No one here is mentioning the obvious...

illegal immigration is the reason our stats are drooping.

Our life expectancy stats are being diluted by third world life expectancy stats from south of the border.

The study said Americans pay more than $7,900 per person for healthcare each year - far more than any other OECD country...

Get rid of the FDA and that would fix itself in no time.

We have more trial lawyers per capita than any country on earth.

The FDA is redundant. The FDA is redundant.

It appears we die sooner because we arent controlling cost. (I don’t get that but what do I know, I only pretend to be a doctor)

35 years ago a doctor told us to not eat any food with more than 5 ingredients.

If you can't pronounce it, you probably shouldn't eat it.

3 steps t fixing healthcare in the US.

1. Get rid of Obamacare.
2. Loser pays. No more “trying to hit the lottery”.
3. Get rid of unnecessary testing.

It is LIFESTYLE!...NOT substandard healthcare! ... Poor diet, lack of exercise, drug & alcohol abuse....

1 Gillion percent correct. This article states fact A then Fact B... then concludes A is the causation of B... WRONG. If you are diagnosed with a disease such as cancer or heart disease, your life expectancy in the US is greater. Other errors: Infant mortality is caused by teenage birthrate and drugs, not health care. C-sections are caused by lawyers as well as the battery of unnecessary tests sited in the artice. Acess to primary doctors does not drive down health care cost.

We report deaths of viable babies that don’t survive.

That is true.

Also, gang-banger murders and car wreck fatalities skew the stats. Other than that, Americans live longer.

Isn't malpractice insurance ridiculously high these days? Too bad Congress isn't so worried about the demand side of the problem which would benefit EVERYBODY except the malpractice lawyers and their lobby.

Medications and processed food are large contributors, look online for deaths from prescription medication, it is huge.
My wife and I were told years ago to not eat any food with over 5 ingredients. We have tried to do this, we are both 85 and use ZERO medications. For most every drug there is a natural product that usually can help, look online. It does take some screening but no deaths are recorded. I have had a slighty irregular heart beat for years, I regulate it with Thyroid drops. I had a heart attack in Jan 1996. I have taken Chelation ever since, no MD involved.
Most people think we are nuts. Big Pharma owns this nation as well as Congress, remember when a prescription medication is given to you THEY ARE JUST PRACTICING!!

"I get the distinct impression that the Swiss on average are in better shape than Americans, please correct me if I'm wrong."

The Swiss have compulsory military service for all males, which typically consists of a year or so of active service and around 10 years in the reserves, which would probably keep the "average" Swiss male 18-30 in much better condition than the "average" American male in the same age range.

All you need to do to discover the obvious answer to your question is to take a quick walk around WalMart or visit Walt Disney World and see all of the morbidly obese people riding around on electric scooters/carts/wheelchairs. Odds are these people will not live beyond 70, and they will use the bulk of Medicaid and Medicare funding to treat diabetes and vascular diseases that obesity fosters.

The AMA, in league with the industries that promote sugar and refined flour products, have convinced people that (1) you can consume large quantities of these addictive products and they will not hurt you, if only (2) you avoid red meat or any fat in your food.

It is not a problem with the medical industry...it is lifestyle choices we make. No entity can make us healthy if we choose to live unhealthy lives. It is as simple as that...we have a diet problem...not a medicine problem.

The cost of healthcare in the United States is 62 percent higher than that in Switzerland, which has a similar per capita income and also relies substantially on private health insurance.

I don't know about Switzerland, but given the fact that Uncle Sam ultimately pays for 50% of medical expenses through various Gov't programs, I don't agree that we "substantially" rely on private health insurance.
