To get welfare initially - No
To stay on welfare - Yes
You raise some good concerns. Of course, it is unlikely we will initiate drug testing for welfare recips or replace welfare programs with private or church incentives until we obtain control of Congress and then it is even questionable.
I was going to suggest that if employers can test employees as a condition to further employment, we ought to be able to test recips as a condition to further receive free money, but that probably will not fly.
It seems to me the gist of your argument is that we should not do something about the problem because it will lead to other perhaps larger problems. Not sure that is a prudent approach.
Let’s consider solving the problem with multiple approaches. Let’s start with installing Americans who believe in the Constitution and a free market in our local, state and federal governments. Let’s regain control of our educational systems, and let’s...
I submit until we do so, we will continue our slide down through the ooze into the grayness.
We are being asked now to bail out many of Europe’s socialist states. The irony is that we are becoming more like them everyday and almost certain to follow in their path...until we...
(Thanks for letting me rant.)
“No. We shouldnt have government welfare or welfare recipients. If private charities want to drug-test the recipients of charity, they should be able to.”
But we DO currently have welfare - so the question asks if those current welfare recipients (and future ones until such time as it no longer exists) should be drug tested.
By saying “no”, it puts you in a category of those who simply think welfare recipients should be left alone with no accountability strings attached.
Should states require welfare recipients to pass drug tests?

Wow! Who knew CNN viewers were so racist?
I’d like to vote “no” because there shouldn’t be “welfare”.
BUt, I voted “yes” because of the way the results will be interpreted.

Same here. I have a friend who has a full time job and does yards on weekends. He complained one day that I deserved to pay more taxes (I own my own business). I pointed out that I pay more taxes than he earns in a year, and that he cheats by not paying on the cash he earns from his yards, and he gets every penny he pays in back at the end of the year to boot. Told him he was an idiot. He thinks he is paying income taxes because they take $40/week out.

I used to have friends like that...
We parted ways, years ago.
They still think I am “stupid” for not “gaming” the many government programs they consider entitlement systems.
I still think THEY are amoral, for dishonestly applying for taxpayer funded government programs, meant for physically or mentally disabled citizens, who are truly unable to care for themselves, on basic subsistence levels.
My former friends and I have no common ground to meet upon, nowadays.
Their present and future additional income depends upon government corruption, and our tolerance for it.
I have tired of my taxes paying for the able, while our truly physically and/or mentally disabled fellow citizens live in tunnels, sewers, tents or caves.
cnn does not have the poll up now. I vote Yes. I not only want drug tests-booze too, but I want a tamper proof ID just like we need for immigrants , DMV lics. et al.
Pretty good size N in this poll, unscientific as it may be.

I voted yes, but if the question had also included a box for ‘No Welfare’ that is the one I would have checked.
“Yup. I work with people who think they pay income taxes, even if they get it all back at tax filing time”
I work very hard not to pay any income tax. I have no withholding to get back. It is my money, and ‘loaning’ it to the govt via withholding is STUPID!
Wrong. I do not accept the status quo - the endless proliferation of welfare recipients - and I do not accept the two categories offered. Conservatives have to get out of the mindset of tinkering at the meaningless fringes of the welfare state. We, through our representatives, have to attack the roots.
