Every now and then a poster will put up a picture that purports to be of a jet fighter breaking the sound barrier. These pictures are of a cloud/ vapor front that forms around the aircraft under certain atmospheric conditions. Today while watching the Indycar race from Loudon N. H. I have seen this cloud/ vapor phenomenon appear off of the rear wing of the cars on the track. While these cars are fast, I don't think they are breaking the sound barrier.

Its the change in air pressure causing the moisture to condense I believe.

It was pretty humid today in Loudon. Intellicast had it listed at 76% at race time.

While these cars are fast, I don't think they are breaking the sound barrier.

No, they aren't. And the vapor doesn't appear because the sound barrier is being broken, although that may cause it to precipitate (pun intended).

As the divergent pressures from the top of the wing and the bottom of the wing down, one of the side effects is to suddenly change the dew-point of the air where they intermix.

Remember.... p=vrnt.... Compressing air makes it hot, lowering the pressure cools it.

So you're looking at a micro-scale thunderstorm event where a dry-line high pressure area meets a cold front.

But I'm just a cook. ;) What do I know?

On the right day (temperature/humidity) you can come into the break at 400+ knots in an F/A-18 and make a nice cottonball over midfield (or at the numbers if you’re feeling frisky).

“Its the change in air pressure causing the moisture to condense I believe”.

Absolutely correct. And, the sound barrier doesn’t need to be broken for the phenomena to display itsself. The cool cone pattern is often seen at low altitudes along coastal areas, where the change in pressure does not require very high speed.

Since 1972, supersonic speed over the contintal US has been illegal. Althought the FAA has no jurisdiction over military operations, in this case the DOD compys except over certain MOA’s and segments of training routes.

I know the combination of cold water and air moving across a narrowing Lake Superior can cause some dense fog off Whitefish point on otherwise bright and sunny days.

Last time I was up there it was sunny most of the way till we got out on the point and it seemed overcast and by the time we stood on the beach we could barely see the water.

To really see if the sound barrier has been broken, full motion video must be observed. A still pic won’t let you know if Mach 1 has been reached or exceeded.

As an aircraft passes through trans-sonic flight the center of pressure moves aft and a discernable nose down movement can be observed. This is known as Mach Tuck.

This tuck is often attributed to the early losses of Lear 23 business aircraft and lead to the FAA requiring a two pilot cockpit rule on sweapt wing aircraft and the ‘barber pole’ on the airspeed indicator.

The crack you hear when snapping a bull whip is the tip
breaking the sound barrier.
