Mount Etna eruption closes airports and 'knocks clocks 15 minutes fast'
Daily Mail ^ | updated at 8:42 AM on 11th July 2011

Sicilians, meanwhile, were quick to blame the volcano after thousands noticed that their clocks were running 15 minutes fast. The fast forward time keeping has affected a wide spectrum of digital clocks and watches - from computers through to alarm clocks. It was spotted when large numbers of locals started turning up for work early, and a Facebook page was organised for those involved to compare notes

A lot of digital clocks are synchronized based on the frequency of the electrical grid. It the eruption knocked that out if wack it could mess up clocks.

Perhaps digital clocks are the natural prey of volcanic eruptions?

It could happen. :)

Explain the watches running fast also mentioned in the article...

<speculation>
For that to happen, the grid would have to have been operating at higher than its normal frequency. Assuming they use 50 Hz power and the grid running at 55 Hz, the clocks would run 10% fast. To gain 15 minutes, the grid would have to have been running that fast for over two hours (actually, 150 minutes). (I'd think that some alarm at the power stations would have been going off for that entire time.)
</speculation>

The volcano obviously bent space-time in the vicinity.

I just noticed that digital watches were affected as well. I have no idea how that could, in any way possible, be related to the grid.

Actually a lot of clocks and watches use a quartz crystal to keep time:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartz_watch

maybe the magnetic fields or some other interference is messing up the frequency the crystals vibrate?

Maybe we should have a volcano put in Washington. That would keep Ø from runnig habitually late for meetings and events.
