My sister stopped over this morning. We got back to talking about moving to another state....again.
She stated Texas has been calling her, she is an RN. The hospital she works at now used to have several booths, recruiting new grads. Now they have none. They are constantly invited to "luncheons", in which they do not participate. They have stopped hiring, as I have found out trying to find a new job.
My sister said they are encouraging recent grads to go to Texas, to get their bacholers & RN license.
I know, from FR, TX is booming. My sister has a friend who moved back to Houston, TX, owns 3 homes in which he rents and said he could get me a great paying job in the oil industry (I hehehe'd at that one).
With my sisters RN license, she wouldn't have a problem getting a job, and perhaps at the rate she is paid here in NY.
We are very nervous about leaving our home state, been here all our lives.....but they are killing us. She asked me to post a thread, specifically to TX FReepers, just for some information regarding the Houston area.
We are suburanites and very Conservative. We would NOT bid well in ANY area that is slightly blue.
We also have questions regarding weather. I (and my sister) must claim "stupid" regarding this subject. We are used to 4 seasons, etc. How is the Houston area, or it's suburbs(must be suburbs. We CANNOT live in a "city" type area).
If I remember correctly (in which she pointed out) Austin is lib, correct?
The last thing we want to do is move across county, only to wind up in a mini NY.
To all you Texans out there, any information would be grateful, especially around the Houston area.

My sister and I are the minority here and want out. Such is a move is extremely scary; however, I remember Rush talking about moving to another state to better one's life.
We are on the brink and no longer WANT to be here. We HATE NY and what it's become.
I don’t live in Texas, but moving out of New York was one of the best moves in my entire life. Trust me, you’re going to be even happier for it in the long run than you think.
However, that is no worry of mine, once they get to know us. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if we were more “red” than they are!

I'm not a Texan but have spent enough time there to know what you're getting into. By your standards, it's hot, big, and really spread out. "Texas is a world all on its own / It takes a lifetime to drive from Eastland to Van Horne..." Just one suggestion - put getting a Texas license plate fairly high on your list. And lose the "I'm gay, I'm for Gore, and I'm here to take your guns" bumper sticker...

I will NEVER like in New York again. I despised Illinois. Georgia isn't bad, but it's getting blue-er. I might end up leaving America completely.

Houston is a vastly under-rated area. Find out where she is going to work prior to finding a place to live to save on commuting time. Housing is very affordable. It’s growing fast and nurses have no problem finding work.
We need all the good nurses we can get in Texas, especially if they are conservative. It is really hot and dry in Texas this particular summer but the spring and fall are spectacular and the winters are not bad at all.

Speakin' for myself as a native Texan I'll say this. I ain't got nothin' against "Yanks" movin' to Texas.....
Provided those "Yanks" are a hundred percent red blooded All American conservatives.....

Houston is much more liberal than Dallas/Ft. Worth. Houston has a lesbian mayor and a disastrous school system because most officials are affirmative action hires. Houston is a sanctuary city and there are many places where no one speaks English. Also the weather is disagreeable with heat and humidity most of the year and the occasional hurricane. We lived in Houston for five years and were happy to leave.
The D/FW Metroplex would be a better fit for conservatives relocating to our state. And at least there is some seasonal change in the weather there, though all of Texas is unbearably hot during our excessively long summers (end of April to November). Utility prices are obscene, but there is no state income tax, so it balances out.
I don't live there but I visit there regularly and I love it . A lot of people I know would love to move there if they could get rid of the baggage they have where they live.
